Finally got the shift cover off. Arrrrgggghhh.
Now, the middle shift rail has a set screw that holds the cast gear fork to the rail. This set screw has a hole in the head for a wire stay to be threaded thru it as a precaution so it doesn't fall into the gears should it became loose. Well guess what??? The screw and the wire went AWOL!!! I can't find them anywhere and fished for half an hour with a magnet. My question is... is it possible they traveled to another part of the tractor? Is the 4 speed gearbox connected to the final drive gearcase? The far back of the tractor is the only drain hole I can see which makes me think they are connected?? Anybody got any ideas where they may have gone to? And if I can't find them, any chance they will come back to haunt me at a later date and ruin my gears?

630 trouble; The wire should be "mechanic's wire"available at most auto parts stores...much more pliable than electric fence wire. The wire's purpose is to prevent the set screw from turning, not to retain the screw if it works out. There is nothing wrong with the system but whoever last installed them in your tractor evidently did not install them properly.

I wass wrong...when in doubt check the book instead of my faulty memory...yes, the set screw could migrate easily to the rear end housing..drain the rear end oil ( you might be lucky and the screw will be on the magnetic drain plug..if not you will have to pull the top cover and all that entails..when you replace set screw in shift fork, be sure the threads are good, use loctite and mechanic's wire to insure you don't have a repeat. I am sorry for the misinformation earlier..I was thinking of the range shift rather than the main transmission. Good luck.

I don't believe that the screw could migrate to the rear end...I am familiar w/ 430 and 530 but I believe the 630 is the same set-up. I have never had one of those set screws come loose on its own...the wire must have broke to allow it to back off, I don't understand how it could continue to work out and the tractor still be shiftable with the setscrew not seated.

Well it didn't work. When the shift fork came loose, I somehow managed to get the tractor locked into two gears at the same time. I had to lift the rear wheels off the ground with my loader tractor and "wheelbarrow" the stubborn thing back home and into the shed. The wire keepers look to be electric fence wire. The wire on the reverse shift fork was also broke and just hanging there. One of the shift forks had been welded at one time also. I think my 570 had roll pins instead of set screws. Maybe that would be a better way to fix this if the threads are loose on the set screws.

I strongly suggest you find them....or the pieces thereof. Drain the fluid. That set screw is hiding somewhere!

Bradley, Thanks for the reply. Do you know if the 4 speed case is connected to the rear end as far as the oil is concerned? Can the screw find its way to the far back of the tractor and not be in the forward case at all?
