We have a 1959 case-o-matic 411b. It has been running perfectly until last week when I was trying to mow with the bush-hog. When I engaged the pto, the lever would just fall back down. So we thought it was just a spring or something and macgyvered it to stay up. But when I starting mowing the pto would quit when I reached higher land and tall grass, when I raised the deck it would start again. Any ideas as to what our problem might be? And how to fix it? Thanks...Linda P.; Aylmer, Ontario, Canada.

Linda, I had a similar problem with my 411B. Turned out it was a broken pin in one of the 2 clevises inside the PTO housing that engages it. The clevises go over center to lock it in. By holding up on the lever I was doing what they were supposed to. But I could not hold enough pressure to engage it right under heavier load. Not a real hard fix but will need to pull the unit off the back if that is the problem. Try tightening the clutches first but since it happened fast I'm thinking it might be a clevis. Good luck, Steve

Sounds like the pto clutch needs to be set a bit tighter, or worst case replaced. The pto lever should "snap" over center to engage the clutch on the pto. When you macgyvered it to stay up it would indeed engage, but wouldn"t have enough pressure on the clutch plates to cut the tall heavier stuff, and then it would just slip.
