Case 450 transmission pump, overnight purging

My old Case 450 traxcavator 207 engine, late 70's I guess, loses suction from the transmission pump when parked on level ground, this happens overnight. To draw trans oil, I have to drop the ripper and lift the rear end way off the ground, so that he machine is pointing downhill. It will then draw, and trans pressure comes up. Occasionally after a long time parked, this idea won't work and I have to just crack (undo)the hose nut on the pressure side of the trans pump, until pressureised oil starts bleeding out, tighten it up again, and away I go. I don't like this scenario as the engine is running and I hope the pump has enough residual oil to keep it lubricated. If it has enough residual oil to be lubricated, why then doesn't it draw from the bottom of the trans. What causes this lack of suction? I am in Australia.

Shane,

Two likely possibilities , one is a leak in the suction line above oil level and is letting air in but not leaking oil out because it is above oil level. Other and very likely is the seal in the pump leaking letting air in and will seal once the oil wets it .

The transmission pump may worn out. I've been able to restore or extend the life of a worn pump by removing the pump, disassembling, machining the two halves (not the center section) flat again, and reassembling. You may be able to purchase new gears and a seal from a Case Industrial dealer.
