For some unkown reason, my fertile mind was thinking about what is the better engine, the Case 504 or the Consolidated Diesel (Case/Cummins) 505. I've never had any experience with the 505, though I have 3 504's. It's probably a silly question, but just wondered if any of you had any opinions.

We run both and can't complain about either. The 504 is a little smoother and quieter, but neither are fuel hogs. If I'm not running the 505's hard they burn very little in fact. The small extra noise from the 505 is more than insulated out in the Magnum cab. I think they both have their place. I get a kick out of the Farmall guys wishing they'd have kept the IH engine in the Magnums, I go to a Red board too and see a lot of comments on how sad it is that IH had to start using Case parts. I kinda like it! (Not to start a flame war just on observation)

Wish I could push my 504 to 300 horse continuous duty. Tom

504 hands down, have run both, 504 takes less fuel, has more backup torque, and is a smoother running engine than the 505.

I've never run a 505 but judging by the popularity of the Magnum, I'd say they are pretty darn good. Our 504 2094 outpulls our 436 turboed 1586 at rpm less than 1800...well it would if you could keep the tires from spinning.

While i am a firm believer in the Case dsls. including the wonderful 504 the 505 is an outstanding engine( except for the ones with aluminum ring lands) many are over 7000hrs. and have never touched and i am sure there are some at 10000 hrs. They seem to take more fuel than the 504 at a given hp but the 505 is capable of more total hp for field use.
