I fixed my late model SC and DC similarly. I used some approx. 5/8" round stock, laid it in the groove, ran it a distance of about 2', and welded it all up with the wire feed welder. I will be filling the area in with bondo, resulting in a flush surface. The correct police are not happy, but they are extremely strong and will look very nice when I'm done.

We've gone to making new fenders, but have done it. First take the fender off the bracket. It is spot welded on, and it is the moisture and mud that builds up at the seam that causes all the trouble. Take a good sawzall and cut the fender off at the top of the place where the rust starts and then find a piece of sheet metal, some angle irons that fit into the two "fan shaped" creases, a body pannel iron, and a couple of ball peen hammers and start tapping and cutting until you get a piece shaped like the one you cut out. If you have a wire feed welder, that works best, polish up the joints on the new and on the old and weld then together, grind down the weld and spot weld it back to the bracket, after you've cleaned and painted it. Touch up any impefections with some bondo and paint them. They may last another 50 years. Or, get lazy and call john Saeli for a new set 315-585-9826 LOL!

On my 800 someone took small metal fence posts and bent them to the shape of the fender and laid them inside the gooves on the underside of the fender and bolted them in place. They are surprisingly very sturdy now but they didnt fix the rust so their not pretty. If you"re looking for parade quality you may as well get a new set. Good luck.

I had a local fabricator bend some patch panels for me. We cut out the rusted section and butt welded the patches in. Takes a little body work but they look good now. Cost me $30. New fenders are definitely the way to go if you don't care for body work (isn't my favorite past time).
