530CK Condensor Mystery....

Hi everyone! Been awhile. Got a problem.

My tractor just stopped dead the other day, and it was low on gas, so I filled it up, then noticed that a plug cable off at the distributor had come (they've done that on occasion ever since I replaced them last year).

So I plugged the cable back in and it wouldn't start, so working down into the Distributor I decided to replace the condensor becasue everything else looked good. Vroom - started up beautifully. Went up and down the driveway, and it died again. Plug cable came off again, which in the past, would only make it run choppy, not kill it.

So I plugged it back in, and it won't start now. So I'm guessing another condensor.

Here's the million dollar question...

Apart from the fact that I need to tie these cables so they're better supported and don;t come off, what causes a condensor to go like that? As I mentioned, a cable off never did that in the past, AND, taking a cable off is often a way to troubleshoot. But here, it's popping my condensor. What causes it, and where can I get a six pack of them for cheap?

Thanks in advance for all your help folks.

Second Thought,
Your problem is most likely a Bad Batch of Condenser's from the supplier.

Babble of Theory:
When a plug is removed the Coil will build up to the MAX energy possible but does not have a path to dissipate that energy, except to air or a carbon path. The next time that the points Close any charge existing on the Condenser is shorted to ground. That rapid discharge must be exceeding the breakdown Spec's on the Condenser.

You could check the Coil Primary connections. The +ve connection is normally common to the secondary, and you may not want that Connection going directly to your distributor (condenser)

Look carefully at the connection end of the Condenser, do you see color (wire insulation)under the Crimp?. Some Mfd's don't strip the wire before crimping and depend on a little Spike to pierce the insulation & provide the electrical connection. I pick/clean out the insulation and solder those type of connectors.

Those cheap lighting fixtures also have those type of connectors & they cause flickering (bad Connection) Junk can be fixed

I installed one of the Pertronix kits with their coil and it seems to be well worth the money, starts a lot better and seems to just all around run better, I also got tired of distributor troubles. That will do away with the condenser.

My old 530CK has given me some of the same symptoms but the cure was a good filing/cleaning of the points. Check to get actual continuity across the points when they are closed. I chalk it up to the fact those distributors don't seal to good and I don't use it that often.
