Big 400 transmission noise?

Hi Folks, I finally got my Case 400 fired up and was able to road test it today. I wanted to put a load on it but didn"t dare because of the horrendous noise from the tranmission. The noise sounds like it might be coming from the right side of the transmission. When I got the tractor the brake pedal linkage was disconnected from the brake on the right side. I"m not sure what to expect on the inside of the transmission but I hear rather loud gear noises when the transmission is moved. I had the wheel jacked up and just turning the right wheel makes a grinding noise. It doesn"t sound (to me) like a loose chain but it"s really bad in the higher gear ranges and less bad in low gear. It doesn"t make any appreciable noise in reverse though.

My first thought was a bad bearing on the bevel gear shaft as it sounded similar to my DV when that was a problem but I don"t think that reverse would have been noise-free like that.

It makes some noise in neutral unless I get it into the neurtral for using the belt pulley, then the transmission is quiet.

I think the throwout bearing is also bad so I"m thinking it"s time to split the tractor and fix that and open the transmission up. I"m not sure I"m up for that yet.

Any ideas on what might be the main problem and how tough and expensive it might be to fix?

Thanks for your help.

I will be taking apart the brake assembly on the right side. The adjuster is missing on that side and I'll probably have to machine another one before it's ready. The thing I am wondering about with the gear noise seems to be rather high pitched... like a spline or something. The tractor also does NOT like to shift so it's quite possible that it's been in water before and things are rusted up in the tranny too.

It came from Louisiana and went to Yuma for probably 10 years before I got it. I drained a bunch of water out of the steering gearbox and there had been a bunch in the fuel system before it rusted out the bottom of everything.

The transmission cover has a bunch of RTV on it like someone had it apart before so I'm not really looking forward to opening it but it's probably necessary if nothing else for my peace of mind.

Thanks for your help!

I agree with Patrick about checking the right brake, which isn"t a major job. If that"s not it, then with the transmission cover removed you can see about everything and should be able to figure out what you"re up against.

Good luck.

I'd pull that right brake assembly off and see if the discs are bound up, or parts broken inside. This sounds more like the right brake is causing problems rather than the transmission. Good luck!

Those tractors are kind of noisey in the transmission, especially high range. There is no chain in them. They are gear drive. If it's been setting there may be some rust on the gears. That will make them noisey. Have you checked the fluid level? If you hear it on the right side it could be a bad bearing on the differential shaft.
