Hello. I have a 1974 870. It has a manual 8 speed and I have never been able to engage the PTO smoothly.

No matter how far I throttle back and no matter how slowly I engage the PTO lever, it AWAYS kicks on suddenly. That really bangs the equipment around and is very hard on the universal joints, gear boxes ect.

My dad bought this tractor new and it has aways done this. For many years the PTO wasn't used very much, so it wasn't a priority but now I'm using it more.

Is this a problem common to the 870 or the 70 series? And does anybody have any ideas on how I can make it engage more smoothly?

My technique is to move the lever about half way and wait till the pto engages then move the lever the rest of the way.

On My 870 I have found that it helps to put 1 of the Remotes against the Releaf valve / Only needed when you are engageing the pto ![This uses some of the presure in the system ]Try this it might help!
