oil pressure for a DC

My '49 DC seems to have low oil pressure when it gets warmed up, under 10 lbs when idling. Should I be concerns over this? It reads about 20 lbs pressure when its cold and it is a brand new gauge.

I run straight 30W non-detergent oil. Would changing to 40W help this some or should I be considering changing an oil pump?

Thanks for the help.

I think the rod bearings are babbitt material. You may be able to remove some shims in order to tighten up your clearances?

While it is probably true that the main/rod clearance is probably loose, the oil pumps in the D series engines are not tight in the gear to end plate clearance. I build competetion engines for Dc's and part of what I do is bring the gear clearance down to the minimum that will allow the pump to turn without binding. properly done it will allow the engine to maintian near maximum pressure even at an idle in an engine that is fairly tight especially if equipped with precision bearings. however , the pan and cam must be removed to remove the pump. mEl

I expect you're loosing pressure through the main and rod bearings. The oil pump is probably fine. 10 lbs. at a low idle is certainly enough to keep the engine in one piece. We had a 41 DC with about that much oil pressure. We ran it that way for 30 years. It got a LOT of hours being one of two tractors on our 130 acre farm. However, it usually did not get the heavy work. The '51 DC, with the high compression head and good oil pressure did the tillage and chopping, etc.

I'd wait for the pressure to drop more. There are many hours of life in that engine.

Bad bearings is probably a significant factor here, I can hear everything knocking when it runs.

This tractor had been sitting in a barn for probably close to 30 years. I repaired a lot of things, but nothing on the bottom end.

Thanks for the help.
