wondering how hard the steering is suppose to be on a 2670 case? When you turn you need pretty much about 2 hands to turn. I was wondering what a person can do different or if you can upgrade the steering? Also do these tractors have the same plastic wedges that are used for keeping the steering wheel in place?

Scott,I'am going to have too agree with you and not the other two.The 70seris 4 wheel drive Case's have the WORST (HARDEST)steering of any modern tractor. The SMALL steering wheel don't help much either,

Hi Scott,
It's Kirk in ks, that's got a 2670,
My sterring wheel has the same thing as your's,
I was wanting to fix mine too, and am gonna get the part's for it,
Scott,,, Does your's have a leaky roof?
Mine does, and I wanna fix it too, so it dont leak water thru the AC vent's and onto the floor,
and the steering is nice and easy like Jim said, you just push the throttle up a bit and then no problem, it has to have more fluid running thru the line's for the pump to make the front, or back wheel's turn easy,
Hope this help's,
kirk,

Kirk, Our roof don"t leak so I can"t help you there. I do have to agree that the steering wheel is to small. I guess I do have another question. What do the steering cables do connected to each corner of the tractor? This tractor is new to us and we are just trying to figure out the hole tractor in general with any quirks that come up. The steering is the biggest thing.

Scott,
Just a kwik explanation of the cables you ask about....

The steering wheel controls the front power steering only, actually quite conventional.
The lever to the left of the steering wheel, when positioned in the middle, controls the rear steering only. The lever must be manually moved when in the middle position. When the engine is rev'ed a little, about 1500 RPM, the lever will respond and move the rear wheels, but while moving it will naturally return to center if not held in-place, just like the steering wheel.
The lever is mechanically attached to the rear steering hydraulic control valve.
The cables from the front wheels move a quadrant which is engaged to the lever when it is moved to the left. When the lever is to the left, the steering is in: automatic 4-wheel steering mode. The cables on the rear wheels interconnect to the control to coordinate alignment.
When the lever is moved to the right it engages another quadrant which is designed to be hard-to-move due to an internal friction clutch. This position is intended to hold the rear steering in a selected position so as to "grab-steer" in relation to the front wheels. The intent of sustained crab-steer is to compensate for hill-side downhill draft and better pull the implement on terraced fields. Actually when in crab-steer mode the tractor drawbar is pulling the implement up-hill, compensating for gravity. This is not possible with an articular style 4-wheeler.

Although, the cables are not listed to be lubricated, perhaps a dry/tight cable could cause high effort steering. Personally I've never had to do so on either my 2470 or 2870. But the cables are quite similar to the cables which control the Rear mounted Hydraulic control valves (for hooking up implements). I have had to remove and lub these cables due to high effort (fatigue) to move the control levers.
Also, the subject lever is detented to position it left/right and I've had to lub the detent spring & ball to allow proper function. The detent is located on the lever itself. The plastic instrument panel cover must be removed to do so. In-fact, while you have the cover off the the cable & quadrant hook-up is readily visible and can easily be studied.
Might be worth checking if the steering cables move freely. Hope that helps.

Kirk, yes our a/c does work. surprisingly!!! We bought this tractor from a machinery jockey. It had sat somewere for 3 years. The guy put new batteries in it and it started right up. We had some R12 left from the past and put it in and the a/c works good enough on our about 100 degree day. At least you aren't sweating. The heater also works. We had to fix a couple of hoses and put a couple of tires on due to weather cracks. The cab was a mess, but we cleaned it out and you would never know. Just to let you know how bad it was, there was moss growing in the inside of the cab. We went through and cleaned it all up. We are going to try it out a year and then decide if we want to paint it or not. Our parameter didn't work either but we found the wire broke on the sensor. I will have to check on the detent spring and ball to lube or at least make sure they are clean. Thanks for all the info so far it is a great help especially when it is a whole new bread of tractor then what we are use to on our farm. We have always had 2wd tractors. We just wanted cheap horsepower.

Hi Scott, thye are there to feed fluid to that corner of tractor, and the power steering is fine on your's too you dont need a bigger wheel ,
I think there either a leak in the system somewherer, or you need hydralic fluid in the resivour under the cab
When you steer at low rev's , it will be a little stiff cause of low pressure and the big tire's on these tractor's,
Put some throttle up a little bit , and it should be fine, let it warm up for at least 5 min
so you see the needle on the tranny temp in the middle, then you can put it in gear and take her out,
Scott, when you shift gear's, take it easy on the throttle, not too much when going up thru the
range, and the same when comeing down, you dont want it to bang when downshifting as It will do if you have too much throttle,
hard on the powershift, & even tougher on your wallet if it need's attention in a shop,
Scott, the rear steering is for field only, as you dont need it for the road,
the tractor will go 13 MPH in high and you dont want any more cause of the short wheelbase as it will bounce, or rock, so take it slow when getting used to it,
you cant put a blade on front as it will offset the balance and want to tip front over so dont think of that,
It will pull 24,000 lbs as Case designed it to do, so it's a good puller,
Chisel plow,s, or that big red 9 blade offset moldboard plow,
It was made to do these thing's Scott, so i dont think you'd have a problem there,
It take's 110 gallon's of fuel,
55 per side,
does your A/C , and heater work in your's scott,
Mine is not working so i have to get it fixed, also the pyrometer is unhooked at the side of turbo , but i dont need it anyway, as im not doing any hard field work right now,
it just to tell you if the tractor is overheating or running too hard, and to slow it down,
Kirk,

The 4 wheel Power steering system is basically the same for the 2470, 2670 & 2870. Effort is no more than your pickup. The only exception would be if you have duals and are trying to turn sharp on pavement while the engine is just idling. Takes quite a bit of power assist to push those two big tires on each corner if they are on asphalt. Solution, just rev the engine a bit... up to about 1500 RPM

Yes, the same plastic wedges are used to lock the telescoping steering column in any elevated position. The design is not worth a Darn. I changed my wedges to brass and they are now failing after only a couple of years. I've decided to just steer with the column/wheel in the down position... no big deal... not worth the trouble to try to make it work.

I can run the tractor at 2000rpms and it is still hard to turn. The tire size is 23.1x30 on inside and 18.4x34 on outside. It is also a little jumpy when you go around tight corners in the field or around the yard. I didn"t know if there is something I should be looking for to know why it turns that hard because it dosen"t turn like a pickup sterring at all.

Scott,
Sorry, I don't have any experience working on the steering for both our 2470 & the 2870. Both steer great. I can tell you that these big girls all use what Case calls a "Triple Pump" for the hydraulic systems. Basically, as the name implies, it is 3 pumps mounted as one, on a common shaft, drawing oil from the common transmission reservoir. Each section of the pump is sized to the volume (GPM) and pressure (PSI) that the system it supplies requires. Power Steering, Power Shift Transmission and Hydraulic system (remote connectors) are the 3 systems.

The Case Service manuals for these tractor is great. There is a "How it works" section, a Trouble Shooting section, as well as a Disassembly, Reassembly section for most systems.
We got ours from a seller on eBay. Paid about $50 if I remember correctly.

I will try to get to our IH dealer and see if they have a book. We just got the tractor and so far we like it except the steering. I appreciate any info that you have. I get along with the dealership real well. Just thought if it is something I can fix myself I will try to tackle it.
