Has anyone had any experience with biodiesel in their tractor? A local cotton gin is getting set up to start producing it from cottonseed oil, seems to be a great idea.

Go ahead, and close your ears on this one. I have been using used, filtered, vegetable oil from various local fast food restaurants for five years now. The first three years, I mixed it about 50/50 with #2 diesel fuel. The last two years, 100% vegetable oil, until the temperature falls to about 45. The vegetable oil has some animal fat in it, and will jell at that temperature. But 95% of my field work is done by then. I run it in me 830, 930, and 1070 CASE. I do notice, that the mufflers will "load up+, or "wet stack" if the tractor idles for a while, (because the engine cools down) and makes a real gooey mess on the hood when you open up the throttle. I have had some success cleaning it up with spray type oven cleaner. But, when the tractor is working, it runs just great. The exhaust smells just like french fries! I know that most of it is really peanut oil. I get the grease (oil) free, and use nearly 1000 gallons each year. It is a very good thing that all of these tractors have a three filter fuel system. I have plugged a few filters because of gelled fuel, but that was my fault for letting the same fuel in the tank when it got too cold. At the end of the season, I run the tanks very low, and the for the winter, I put in about a quarter tank of #2 diesel fuel. Even though I don't run them in winter, I want to be ready, just in case. It does beat $3.00/gallon, but it takes some work to filter and store the fuel.

Thats interesting, I've wondered what would happen if you tried that. I run a diesel generator that would probably be ideal for straight oil, I need a press and some seed!

Are ya'll running it 100%, or blended? This biofuel thing could be a pretty significant development for farming that is overdue.

Soy Diesel is the only fuel that I have used in over 3 years. If you choose not to use it you had better use a really good fuel conditioner. In an effert to reduce emissions they have taken the sulfur out, and the fuel is really dry. Injector pumps are taking a lot of wear. I have had no problems with the soy diesel. Lots of farmers here in SD use an antigel agent in the fuel, and run in all winter. No more #1.
