I've been thinking about buying some of those battery disconnect switches that attach to the battery cable. I think one of the purposes for them is to reduce battery drain when the tractor is not in use. I am concerned, however, that putting one of these on a 6-volt system might add too much resistance and cut the cranking power.

The only down side I"ve heard is that you want to use your bio fuel on a consistent basis and refill your tanks with fresh often as soy diesel will start to scum up in the bulk tanks if left stagnant for months on end.

Like any other type of switch that carries current, it just has to be rated for what you want to do. Many cheap disconnect switches that are just barely adequate for certain 12 volt loads are not heavy enough for similar sized 6 volt loads. Just figure how much current rating you need and buy it that way. With most smaller gas tractors, it's not much. Some diesel starters can draw close to 1000 amps at full surge. The good switches - like John Deere uses with dual-battery diesel tractors costs around $25, carries a 1000 amp surge-rating, 5-36 VDC, and 175 amp continuous rating.

All of the military equipment I worked on had them simple little device that cuts all power off. Won't make any difference in power from battery if connected correctly.

I put one on my antique 1.5 ton truck. Too many kids around to take chances. It also kills the power to all wiring eliminating the chance of a fire in the shop.

I have one on my 530 because I keep it in the basement in the winter so it will start real easy. I did not want to have a "live" battery down there that could cause a fire if the wiring shorted out.

I put a cut-off switch on my Case La ...I put a hour meter on it so when it's running ...know the hours on the oil change that way...the meter will run ALL the time till I put the cut-off in [ don't ask how I know this ]...Don't have any problems starting...it's a 6 volt.. Also at shows ..don't have to worry about a drain battery..[ from someone screwing around w/it ] Mark

C. Amick - I have the battery disconnect on a couple of my tractors. I don't believe you lose much cranking power, never tested it with a meter, but can't tell the difference. I like them when displaying tractors at a show. I disconnect the power and don't have to worry about some person starting the tractor or pulling the lights on. In the winter months if I don't plan on using the tractor for a period of time I cut off the power. Do I save anything by doing this, who knows, but it works for me and I am the only one it has to work for.

Wouldn't it be less trouble to just diagnose the cause of your battery drain? Or first even find out if you HAVE a battery drain? In a properly wired tractor, there should be absolutely no drain on the battery when the key is off, apart from normal internal discharge (which can't be fixed without inventing new battery chemistry).
