I have a 1962 930 diesel 6 speed. I paid $2,000 for it 3 years ago. I knew it had an ether addiction when I purchased it but it has worked fine but starting to have ailments...like oil in water and won't fire up until it gets it's ether fix. anyway, I'm thinking about an overhual. I've never done one, but I really like this tractor,(use it on only 6 - 8 acres) and believe the trouble may get worse if I don't fix things now. So, for my purposes... an in frame overhual?? ...any and all ideas welcomed.
Thanks,

Ron

I also have a 62 930.. Mine has a M&W turbo and pistons. I had my injector pump done, and injectors as it would not get fuel lonnnng before I bought it. I reset pump timing as the shop manual says It starts well in fairly cold weather, below 40 or so it will occasionally take a small ammount of ether. Was told to watch the either though, as these heads have a tendancy to crack with it's use.

We have plans to dyno it this summer to see what it makes and see if we might not be able to get a little more from it (don't worry has a Pyrometer to make sure there is no meltdowns) It is probably around 105 now, would like to get just a little more to help with the 6 bottom moldboard we pull behind it

Good luck with your project...

Your starting problems could also be injection timing so when you put it all together again check that too.

If you are getting water in the oil You definitely want to overhaul immediately before you screw up your crankshaft. In frame is the way to go as there is not a rear seal on the crank to worry about. It will also cure your starting problems once you drop in new sleeves and pistons. Send your heads out to a machine shop and when you get her back together it will run like new. Good luck

Thanks for your reply. I'm getting oil in the water but not water in the oil. Radiator gets oil in water. So, I will also need to replace all of the pistons? What about the valves?

A good valve job is critical to starting. Unless the seats & valves are in super shape, I toss them & replace w/ new. That is the key to raising compression. Once they start grinding valves & seats, they lower compression. I always have the heads planed. That gives more compression. Our 730 will start almost instantly @ 30 degrees without heat. The other thing to do to help that 930 start is to convert from 2 6V batteries in series to 2 12V batteries in parallel, if it hasn't already been done.. The only thing we use ether here for is to mount a stubborn tire once in a while.

Thanks John.
Are valves and seats hard to replace on a 930?
The existing battery is one long and heavy 12v with 1,000 cranking amps...it does fire her up (along with her dose of ether). Also, this still has the original generator (doesn't work) should I rebuild that or switch to an alternator? I've read where the mounting differences can be a bit of work. This generator has a double pulley.
Yeah I don't like using the ether but I can't get her to crank up if I don't use it..and I know that's not good for the engine. I tried once without the ether and all she would do is puff and snort , bellow smoke...compression problems I would assume.

Valves & seats are no problem for a shop that does headwork. 2 - 1,000 Amper's would work well. Heavy enough battery cable to deliver the amperage is also a must. I like to keep things original, so I'd fix the generator. Does the manifold heater work?

It would thread into the bottom, center of the intake manifold. Has a wire running to it.
