Hello, Three days into owning a Case 580 with a diesel engine, I am wondering two things. One, can anyone narrow down from the picture what year this is? The S/N tag is missing from the cowling on the right hand side. The tractor has the three position hydraulic shuttle shift with 4 speeds. The second question has to do with the intake manifold heater. In the Case factory service manual, the heater solenoid is activated by a white wire (#30) that comes from the ignition switch. I am not sure if the ignition switch in my tractor is the correct one, as the heater solenoid is only activated while the engine is being cranked. It seems to make more sense that the heater solenoid could be activated for a short period prior to the engine starter being engaged. Is this the way it should be?

Thank you,
Greg

Thanks for all the help! Someone replaced the ignition switch and it does not work the same as originally intended. Yes, this engine seems to start rather easily in northern Ohio 20 degree weather, which surprises me a bit.

Greg,
As stated by others, the key is turned counterclockwise to activate the manifold heater. If your switch has been replaced with a generic aftermarket switch it probably doesn't have that feature. I'd remove the feed wire from the switch's starter terminal as it will overload the capability of the switch terminals and always activate the heater (warm weather) even when not required. Which of course also draws current away from the starter. A seperate switch could be fitted if you feel you want the heater.

In my opinion, it is an un-needed feature, at least here in SE Michigan. It only heats the small amount of air initially inside the manifold which is sucked into the cylinders within one-round of the engine. Then the heat is gone and the engine didn't start yet anyway. I perfer to crank the engine for a few seconds anyway to build oil pressure before it fires. Our 580CK starts well without the heater, if the battery is OK. We've disabled the heater so it cannot be used to drain the battery during cold weater. We've done this on our other Case tractors also.

Manifold heaters just don't work as well as injector heaters which warm the fuel.

580CK produced from about 1967 till about 1971. Manifold heater operated by turning key to left and holding for prox 60 seconds. Then start immediatly. Early 580's had no neutral, later machines had a neutral lock position. Larry

Can't help on the year but the Ag Case tractors activated the manifold heater by turning the key backwards past OFF then you turned to START.
