hey guys thanks for all the advice well at least i got my brakes working again after i took off the brake cover they just needed a good wd-40 to get them loosened up.. I seen the phillips screw holding the plate on But someone previous to me had stipped it and there was no getting it off. so for now i guess i ll leave it till warmer weather. I filled up the tranny in last agust and there is still fluid so its just a little leak maybe a half ounce a day. and i olny use the tractor for moving some bales and pushing snow. Maybe my next question should be is there perhaps some magical additive i can add that might plug the leak Ive heard lucas hubsealer works good any other ideas THANKS FOR THE HELP

Do not arbitrarily just remove a shim to "tighten up". They are there to set up relationship of ring and pinion. Doing so could cause you a world of trouble. Rear end must be set up correctly. Larry

Before you remove backing plate, you should determin why old seal was leaking. Did side gear shafts have too much side play??. If so just replacing seal woud be a waste of time without futher investigation, Bad thrust washer?? failed bearing?? Just not set up right??. Soooo many things to look for.

Brake plate has a phillips head screw holding it. in reply to kdok44, 04-08-2007 07:08:28
After removing the brake housing, you'll find a large phillips head screw holding the brake plate/pinion bearing holder in place. When the screw is removed, the brake plate/pinion bearing holder will come out. After replacing the seal, use care when putting the brake plate/pinion bearing holder back into the housing. There is a sharp edge on the pinion shaft that can destroy your new seal. Wrap a thin piece of tin around the pinion shaft to protect the seal, then pull it out after the brake plate/pinion bearing holder is back in place.

my VAC leaked from the same spot. The plate you describe is the bearing holder. It has end play shims behind it. Before you disassemble any further check for any play in the shaft due to slightly worn bearings. Then wiggle the bearing retainer off with a pry bar and a brake spoon. The seal comes out with the retainer. I replaced the seal and left the thinnest shim out to snug up the shaft. I also found a loose retainer stud that i wrapped with teflon tape. My bearing retainers were cracked along the drain holes but I reused em figuring they fit so tight in the hole they shouldn't "open" up. Time will tell...
