if a 3 brush generator field is grounded externally thru a resistor, what is the value, in ohms, of that resistor? This resistor is located on the back of the rotary light switch, if so equipped. When the switch is turned "on" the value of the resistor is changed or shorted to provide increased charge to run the lights.
i am working on a 1942 "D" with a 6 volt system

The resistors are typically 2 or 3 ohm 10 watt rated. This will give you a couple amps on low charge and about 10 to 12 on high charge. Usually you set the third brish to give just a slight charge with the lights on and engine running at high speed. The light switch puts the generator on high charge with the lights on.

These work pretty good for tractors that are farmed with, but don't charge the battery real well if you just start it for a few minutes to putt around and then put it away. If that's how the tractor gets used, you may want to consider converting to a 12 volt alternator system. Good luck with it!

Here is a new resistor switch, see link below. I thought the DC's had a 2-brush generator with a voltage regulator and a fused light switch? Perhaps the earlier ones had the 3-brush generator with the cut-out relay and resistor light switch?
