580 B CK Brakes disassembly question

I'm in the middle of doing the brakes on my 580 B CK. The left side brake housing came off fine, but the right side I'm having problems with removing the differential lock cover to get at the bolts for removing the brake housing. I have a factory manual and have followed their procedure. But the diff case wont budge. I've double checked and all six bolts are out. I've taped on it with a hammer and it will slide up and down a 1/2" or so. I even got a screwdriver under the edge thinking I could just pop it loose, it will move out @ 3/4" but thats it. It feels like something is holding it.

Can I take off the brake housing without removing the diff cover? If so how do I get around the actuator arm of the diff lock to reach the bolt underneath?

If not, what am I doing wrong?

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Jim

No, not yet.

It really feels like something inside is holding it.

Well OK, I presume you removed the alan head bolt, many people miss it. If so, it probably has a lot of crud behind the sleeve or maybe a shoulder (less likely) preventing it from sliding off the side gear. Unfortunatly you may be left with desroying the diff lock housing to get the brake housing off. the only other thing if all else fails is to drill a hole in the diff lock housing and soak the shaft with some penetrant and keep working the lever to loosen the crud, good luck Larry

Jim, It's been awhile since I had mine apart, but it sounds like your locking collar is not sliding off the shaft. There could be wear on the shaft causing it to bind or its seized???. Did the diff lock work?

Good thought. Yes, the diff lock did work before I started. I did try hooking the linkage back up, starting, and putting it in gear to see if that would help but couldn't get it to lock up. The other side is completely disassembled.

Any thoughts?

Thanks, Jim
