Good day,My 1952 Case VAC has slow but steady gear oil leak between seal and axel as it exits the case, my rim is always coated with gear oil. How do you extract that seal for replacement? All ideas welcome.

What am I missing, are older VAC's different? My 53 has flooded axles. Looks like all you have to do is pull the wheel, jerk the old seal, clean up the shaft, and pound in a new seal.

Go to the link and click on page G5 D1 & D2.

I've done the job. I can assure you that removing that seal with the axle still in the housing would be a chore. Removing the axle is not a difficult job. Remove the wheel hub, pull the PTO, remove the axle nut, slide the axle out.

Well Aug, I haven't done a VAC axle seal but have done many similiar seal replacements. I've always found it easier to install a seal with the shaft in place when possible.

I guess it is just a matter of whichever way floats your boat.

Joe:

I replaced the seals in my VAC and I just used my slide-hammer-with-a-screw-on-the-end-screwed-into-a-small-hole-drilled-in-the-seal-tin-shell method, and it worked just fine.

I didn"t want to fuss with the axles if I didn"t have to.

Frank

Hi Frank,

Yeah, the screw works good most times, I been using the hardened hook adapters on the hard ones. Augie is probably just used to working on them ornery MO tractors.

The axle needs to come out first.

The choice is YOURS ,. Before you tear it down ,,If You have LUCAS Hub Sealer in your auto parts store , Put that in your tranny , It may swell up the old seal and give it new life .. Good luck .. Jim
