Hello, I just bought a case 530 Loader / Backhoe. The tag says the model is a 540C-H, serial # is 6?50672 I am looking for some specs on this tractor. The operators manual I have is very confusing because it covers 4 different models and many different options available within those models. I have been trying to find a site that can tell me about my specific model. The trans or torque converter is acting up a little and I need to know what I have here.
Any help would be apreciated.
Thanks, Jeff

Jeff;

Tractor was made in 1960. The second number you have missing is a #1. Tractor is a utility model, gasoline engine with torque converter drive and high speed gearing in high gear. May or may not have shuttle shift. Can you describe the trouble you are having with the transmission? Many people confuse normal slippage of the converter with a slipping clutch, or difficulty shifting gears because they don't idle the engine when shifting... Gene

Hi Gene, Thanks for the info. The trans or torque converter seems to be slipping. The tractor does not want to move in 2nd or 3rd gear when in High range. If I shift it back to low it will move. If I use first gear in High range it will move. I was going to start by draining and replacing the fluids and put in a new filter. Sound about right?

It is hard to determine what you mean by the trans or torque converter slipping. The transmission is not slipping. The torque converter is designed to slip and will not pull at all at low engine RPM. The more engine speed, the less slippage. As the tractor starts moving, the handle is moved to lock up the torque converter. Is the converter clutch now slipping?... Gene

Hi Gene, I spent a couple of hours last night doing a search in this forum on torque converters. After reading up on it here in this forum , I understand how the trans operates. By slipping I meant that when in 4 gear and throttle applied, the tractor was not moving. The research I did lead me to a few possibilities for the casue of the problem..
Plugged filter
low fluid level
pressure relief valve stuck open
worn out pump
plugged trans cooling lines
I am going to follow up on these and see what I get.
Thanks for your followup with me.
