Does anyone know how much a gallon of Automatic Transmission Fluid weighs or a gallon of 80W-90 gear oil??

I need to know the weight differences between the two types of oils.

I am not sure if you want the weight or the viscosty.

Search for the brand & type of oil on the net. On the product data sheet (specification) and some times on the material safety data sheet, the API gravity & viscosty will be listed.

To find the weight you have to calculate the specific gravity using this formula SG = 141.5/(API gravity + 131.5).

The specific gravity of the oil is the % weight as compared to that of an equal volume of pure water. Below I am using one gal of water, weight is 8.34 lb/gl.

Quakerstate Supertech 80 - 90 gear oil, API gravity = 26.0
141.5/(26.0 + 131.5) = .898 x 8.34 = 7.49 lb/gl.

Chevron Dexcon III, API gravity = 33.4.
141.5/(33.4 + 131.5) = .858 x 8.34 = 7.16 lb/gl.

No difference, they weigh the same thing. Are you talking about lb/gal weight or the viscosity wt like 10 wt 30,wt, 90 wt. These numebers are just an API designation related to the viscosity or thickness (runniness) of the oil.

Common lubricating oils have a specific gravity of 0.88 - 0.94 @ 60°F. That is 7.34 - 7.84 lbs/gl @ 60°F. If you need to be more precise, you’ll need the API gravity:
SG at 60 °F = 141.5/(API gravity + 131.5)

Just a bit less than 8 lb/gal. Water weighs 8.3 lb/gal and oil, gasoline, diesel weigh a bit less.
