In the January/February 2007 edition of 'Antique Power' magazine, there is an article about a Case 500. These tractors apparently have factory power steering. There isn't much detail in the article, but the pictures seem to suggest that the guts of it are contained in the steering arm, with hoses running up to a belt driven pump.

Does anyone know much about this setup and if it could be adapted to the 'D' and 'S' series tractors? The pictures in the article make it look pretty straight forward.

With a cutting torch and a welder anything can work. The bigest concern is the mounting of cylinder and the power steering link into the chicken roost arm. As easy as the D and S series turn why?
I would think that it would be easier to convert with a char-lynn power steering sytem. The 500 did have two different systems. One that the clyinder ran between the front tires and the other one like the 600 and 900 had. The 930's I have seen have a little bit different set up. Another solution is to find a dist. mount pump and use it for your hydraulic supply. I have a Case S with this type of pump on an old Case S thats is a supply for the hydraulics. If you go to caseih.com and go to the parts manual for a 500 it should show you a break down of all the parts

Thanks for the tips. I am looking for a setup where the valve bolts onto the chicken roost and the cylinder bolts between the front wheels. I don't know much about the char-lynn booster system that I have seen discussion about.

The power steering would be for a 'D' not for a 'DC'. The 'DC' steers pretty easily. The 'D' steers hard, especially with a snowplow or brush forks on the front.

The western special versions of the 730,830 and 6speed 930 used the same basic set-up and most of the seal kits are available. There were two different suppliers of the valve/ram assemblies used durring the 30 series production.

You could use that type of system on any "Chicken roost" type of steering. We use one we buy new here for about $350. The key is to make sure your steering arm actuates the ram properly or you may be steering in the opposite direction than intended. We had to put the arm up on an early version, we've sense gotten smarter, but yes, with a little adapting, they will work if you can mount a pump some where.
