Older guy I work with had a C case when he first started out. He says it had a 4 speed, and had grease zerks in the front wheel grease caps, and had grease zerks on the rear axles. My 34 CC has a 3 speed, front grease caps with NO zerks, and grease cups for the rear axle Is he right??

My old Case Shop Manual shows forwards speeds for the tractor model C and L to be 3 speeds. All others D, LA, R, S, V and VA shown as 4 speed.

Our C model had the grease zerks in the front wheel hubs when purchased. Maybe it was on some and not others...maybe an extra!

I had a CCS high crop with a four speed transmission and electric starter, it had the CCS drop boxes, not the DCS drops and had the C series engine.

I have heard my grandfather tell that both he and his uncle bought new SC s right after the war. Grandpa ordered his with the optional 4th gear but his uncle could see no reason to spend $ just to go faster down the road. However, within 2 years he traded said tractor in on one with the 4th gear.

There could have been some period where 4-spd transmissions were tested on C's.

I though the first D's only had 3-spds, which would mean that a production 4-spd transmission didn't exist yet.

I have 2 1931 CI's and both are 3 speeds. They did have the different sprocket option to make them go faster. It wouldnt suprise me that some of the very last CI's had the 4 speed. Also keep in mind that some of the say CI's were changed to CC's so they could sell them easier.

The c and cc only had a three speed from the factory, tho some mechanic figured out that once the dc cases came out that the fourth gear fit the c series so some were put into the tractors to give more range of speeds. Also it didnt take long for a farmer to drill and put in grease fittings on the front and rear to help save on wear. Bill
