Hi, I purchased a 1962 case 430 with s/n 8201565 and am trying to find out more about the tractor, my first. I have purchased the IT repair manual and Case Operators manual, but neither describe a 4-speed transmission with 3 ranges L - D - H. The service manual mentions the hand clutch (left hand side) but the owners manual makes no mention. Does anyone have a source of information on these?

Thank You.

-Ernie

Congratulations on your recent purchase. I have a 310B-H that is a loader/forklift. Essentially the same tractor(just older).I went out and started it for the first time in 2 and a half months...It didn't turn a half revolution, and it was running....Case is da Bomb! Your transmission set-up is called a Triple-Range,and it WILL go faster than you want....

The hand clutch is primarily to stop the forward movement when useing the pto. The clutch pack is located under the triple range shifter cover and it is ajustable. Might be a good idea to check the front end assy for lose bolts before trying that 4th gear on the high side. Most triple range ones will 20mph or better.

Thank You for the information and help.
It is greatly appreciated.
Do you have any information on the adjustment process? The gears shift OK when the idle is low, but has some problems at higher RPM.

I never run in H, it's only good for road transport and unless you have rebuilt the front end and steering, 4th high will cause a wreck.

The hand clutch disconnects power to the transmission while continuing power to the PTO. you should not be able to shift gears with the hand clutch out and the foot clutch in. To actually change gears or ranges you need to push in the foot clutch.

I brushhog in L2 and finish mow in L3 or D2 depending on how thick the grass is. I plow in L2 or D1 but I haven't done much of that.

Trouble spot on mine is the foot clutch wearing and the 3 point, the arms get loose on the shaft and then the splines strip. But after 7 years she still does the job.

I was told not to use L1 or L2 for heavy loads like plowing etc. Only for slow speeds. I plowed in D1 with 3X14 and a Case 630 with triple range.

Good to know about the L1-2 and plowing. I'm and Oliver man and bought the Case used, so not up on some of the tricks. I bet the L1 pust out too much torque for some rear end part. I'll use D1 for plowing from now on.

When mowing with my rotary mower (bush hog) or sickle mower, I use the hand clutch to stop forward motion, then step on the brake, then step on the foot clutch and change gears quickly. The hand clutch does not completely disengage like the foot clutch does. If you miss the shift and it starts to grind you will have to shut off the pto and start over. The hand clutch should snap in when fully engaged. There is a spec written some where on the amount of pull it should require.
