I've just completed a rebuilt on my engine. New magneto is timed correctly, but still have a slight backfiring sound on a small scale-seems like one tappet not gapped right, retorqued head/regapped tappets on the valve-still having the same problem. I've tried advancing/retarding the magneto-doesn't seem to help. Manifold appears to be good. The carburetor was rebuilt-checked the spec. adjusted both set screws.any idea? Also the IT manual called for ten quarts of hydralic fluid for a S series with one working cylinder with continous pto-seems to be quite in excess compared to what I drained out. Are there two drain plugs on the right side for gear lube? If so what is the smaller plug to the rear approx. 10" higher and further back(7/16" plug)It appears that it is an upper fill plug for the gear lube, but appears to go into rear hydralic housing? Thanks in advance for any help!
Nate

Have you checked your magneto to make sure it is firing correctly?

I had a similar problem on my DC, the magneto was actually firing 2 cylinders at once.

Mathias may have a remedy to consider ,, I want to clarify my earlier response , The Intake and Exhaust manifolds share the same castings and could crack thru and cause this problem,, Everytime I had that problem it was difficult to detect ,I had to take the Manifold set off to check for sure , outside looks can be deceiving, , ,,, Hydro Level .. If you are 2 '' from the top something is not right ,, There is a 1/4 pipe thread plug on the Right back of tranny that indicates proper full level , trannylevel plug is also just a little forward of that ,,, Hope all works out ,, Jim

A valve job was completed with four new springs. Oil pressure is at 20psi. We triple checked the flywheel timing-don't believe that's the culprit. valve were gapped to .010. The manifold is rust pitted on the exterior. Manifold gaskets are new. IT manual does not state manifold torque settings-which I don't think there is ,but going to recheck. The 10 quarts of hydralic fluid is approx. 2" below the fill plug-concerned with that blowing a seal if pressure builds up. Still working on a process of elimination for the slight backfiring/flutter. Thanks for the replies!!

Hi Nathan Sounds like you have done everything well,,Double check your flywheel timing , you could be out 180 degrees ,but only the Diesels will at least run in that situation ,, SC 's are infamous for cracking or burning out the intake and exhaust ports and consequently intermixing fumes ,fuel , and exhaust , Another of CLAUSEN"S demanding foulups designs , We all could had enjoyed a much better tractor if they would have kept that guy off of the CASE premises and pink slipped him before W W 2 All things being douible checked and correct ,What you are experienceing is the early signs of the problem before it goes to missing , That is the trick all my SC's have done to Me .. I Think George in Maryland can repair them good as new if that is the problem , He has been on this site from time to time, Good Luck , Jim

Hey Nathan: Did you do a valve job? I'd check compression. Although, even with a compression check at cranking speed, a weak valve spring might not show up.

Nathan, that small pipe plug on back of housing is for full determination.Pour your oil in until it runs out of that hole! Filling hole is on the top of case below seat, second plug back.
