Was the regular 400 replaced by the 400 Super Diesel?
Did Case not produce both tractors at the same time?
I've never seen an advertisement or any kind of sales info from Case showing both tractors at the same time.

That thought did cross my mind, but then how do we explain the 1200 4WD not being named a 1230 along with the rest of the 30 Series from Racine?
They quit the 100 Series in 1959 and had been running with 30 Series for going on six years when they introduced the 1200. It just doesn't make sense to me that it wasn't named a 1230.
After all, they did replace it with a 1470 and not a 1400. ???

Case started producing the super diesel in 1957 at serial number 8106131. At this serial #, the engine block casting changed from 6400 to A1111, and the engine size was increased from 251 to 267 cu-in. To my knowledge, no additional regular 400 diesels were produced after SN 8106131. Additionally, the RPM"s on the American Bosh injection pump was changed from 1450 RMP"s on the regular Case 400 to 1550 on the Super.

Thanks for the info Jim.
The 300 roundnose became the 350 when Case made it larger, so why didn't the 400 become a 450 instead of a 400 Super? Or maybe the 350 should have been named 300 Super? Does anybody know why they weren't consistent?

The 400 supers were only built in late 1957. The 400s were replaced in 1958 with the Case 700 (standard trans) and the Case 800 (case-o-matic trans) units. If you were to compare the 58 Case 700 diesels and the 400 supers, you would find two tractors that are almost mechanically identical. (primary difference being the 700s have the new sheet metal).

I don't believe 350 replaced the 300. They made the 300 right on through the b series in 58,59. They droped the 350 but made the 600b through 59.

Yes, I believe the 300 and 350 were produced at the same time and I have ads showing them together with the 400 and 600. I wasn't sure about the 400 and 400 Super being produced at the same time. My next question was why wasn't the bigger 400 called a "450", instead of 400 Super, to be consistent with the upgraded 300 being a "350".
Does anybody know why Case numbered them that way? If not, does anybody know any old Case men who were working at the tractor works at the time that we could ask?
