I'm interested in purchasing a 1975 Case 450C. It has 5300 hours and has had the 188 deisel replaced in 1991 with a rebuilt one. The owner said someone may have sabotaged it because he said he just dicovered water in the trans mission and oil in the radiator as well as the air filter was rusted like it had gotten wet. He said he would flush and replace the trans fluid and cooling system as well as replace the battery oil in final drives, engine oil change, rebuild starter, and rebuild transmission pump. If the dozer wasn't sabotaged can anyone suggest how water could get in the transmission and oil in the radiator? He is asking 8900.00 after repairs or $7000 before repairs. Is this a resonable asking price? I plan on using it for about 1 year and re selling it for what or close to what I paid. Any advice or tips on anything especially what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

Thnak you,

First of all they didn't make the C model until 1983/4. If its a 1975 it is a plain 450,or what they call a 450A.I dought it was sabotaged, like BC said water got in the tranny and hydraulics from sitting in the weather and in the sun. If there is oil in the water pretty unlikely it got there from the motor i would bet when motor work was done anti freeze was drained in a catch pan with some oil or some got in there and it was poured back into the radiator . I have done this myself ,altho i strain it oil still gets in there and i figure it would only lube things and not harm in a small quanty.

if it was sitting outside water in the trans is easy to explain...rain
oil in the radiator could be a blown head gasket or a cracked oil cooling coil IF radiator has coil built in...been a long time since i been around a 450 dozer so i dont remember how its set up.
my best advice...pay a qualified mechanic to check it out BEFORE ya hand over any cash...dozers dont have any cheap parts
