I have a 580B that I just replaced the throw out berring on and after I put it together I have trouble with getting it to go backwards. I will put it in reverse and wait, and then all in a sudden it will start going backwards. Sometime it goes backwards right away and other times it takes a few minutes before it starts moving. Then after a few times it wond go backwards at all until I shut it down and wait an hour. HELP!

going by the first part of your post, it sounds like my machine. When you pull the lever back, it actually goes to far and the spool does not line up properly and thus it needs to build up pressure. If I only pull it back part way then it starts to reverse immediately. There is a stopper that wears out on the shaft.

Try pulling it back slowly to a point where it starts to reverse and then try again much faster this time only pulling it back to this position. It should reverse straight away. As for having to wait an hour, I cant [resume an answer for that one - sorry

Thanks Mick K. I now can go in reverse if I just feather it into reverse and find the "sweet spot". Did you fix your tractor? Is this a matter of replacing the worn shaft that the stopper has damaged?
