So I bought the red bottle of HEET at my local NAPA. I fired up the tractor (amazing how well the in-line heater works!) and the hydraulics worked right away, they were not frozen even at 15 degrees. Anyway, after warming it up I added the heat and also added anti-gel and stabilizer to my fuel. Works like a charm, nice fast hydraulics and lots of snow removal. Now if I could just keep the neighbor from driving over the plowed snow with his pickup, he keeps pushing the plowed snow back onto the shared lane.

cj3, come spring and warmer weather (after the tractor has been idle a few days) you should pull the drain plug on the tranny and let the water out. Water is heavier than oil and will be sitting in the bottom. When you start to get oild out quickly jamb the plug back in and tighten it down. This kind of messy, so have so an oil change pan or something to catch the fluid in under the drain hole,

HEET has no anti-corrosives in it and the water will emulsify in the oil and could lead to oxidation (rust) in critical places like bearings.

My 630 had about 4 quarts in it as best as I could tell. Looks like I caught it in time before any oxidation damage though.

Umm, I am confused, what does heat in fuel have to do with frozen hydraulics ?

I'm sorry, I added the "heet" to the hydraulics and put a separate additive in the fuel.

Oh, yes that makes more sense, thanks. I was not aware that you could add "heat" to hydraulic oil.

Hi folks. The old timers have been adding heet to the tranny on the tractors that stayed outside for years. They will not move when that accumulated water freezes in the first cold snap.

I must be an old timer! Seriously, someone told me about it the other day, it's really just isopropyl alcohol with a few more additives. I'll try draining the water from the system in the spring.

You don"t really need to wait until spring, you can drain the alcohol/water mix out right now. It really will trash your bearings very quickly, so why wait?
