I got a 1958 311 B which is basically a 300 or same as other triple range models I have the triple range shifter out and replaced the pin that holds it on as my lever pulled out.. When I went to put it back in I pulled one of the forks out sideways and cant get it to snap back into to detent hole. I’ve tried everything to get the rail out to get the ball out and start over. I see the book says replace with a shorter spring etc on the detent ball. I read other post the thing will fly across the room and kill ay lol! Anybody had this problem I need the tractor to plow all the snow we got so I can make it to a surgery soon. I have tried to press it apart with a large c clamp and sockets over the end of rails and don’t want to have to put it in a 12 ton press but will if I have to. Basically the ball has way to much tension I cant align the forks in neutral to drop the shifter back in one is ok the other is turned out at a angle and wont turn back in now I cant get its rail to slide forward or backwards enough I don’t know if I just cant get the leverage or what. I had it in a vise etc.. On the tractor you used to have to wiggle it but all 3 ranges worked fine till I pill the lever out with it stuck in low. It was just a little 1/16 pin held it in and I drilled it and beefed it up with a 1/8 pin. Any help is appreciated Thanks

I had the same problem except mine was on the main transmission on a 430.I was trying to replace a broken fork on one of the rails. I had a couple of other bad shifter caps for parts so I was going to remove a fork from one of them and replace the broken one. On the one I was getting the part from, the rails popped out real easy but on the one I was repairing, There was no way it would come out. Apparently the detention ball has to be alligned with a groove in the rail, but there is no way to tell when it is alligned. The way I finally got it out was to get a bigger hammer and flail the !@#$ out of it. Don't dare do this unless you have plenty of extra parts to waste. You could break something in a hurry and those parts are hard to find. An experienced mechanic might know some tricks to help you get it out.

Well after putting on my reading glasses and studying the book on replacing the forks I believe I found the problem. They are like a rubic cube and everything has to be set in the right position because of the locking pin between both shifter rods. You probably have to pull both forks outward till the rods are in the right position. I may just put it together without one fork bolt and leave it in one gear till it warms up basically because I have been to sick to mess with it long in a cold shop. But what looks like may have to happen is disassemble the one that’s right to remove the pressure on the one that’s wrong then check the spring length and set to the new lengths. you grind a slight taper on the end of the shift rods to reassemble and then start over with them aligned properly. The shifter is made so the locking pin is exactly that when one fork is engaged the pin is supposed to stop the other rod from moving. Its sort of a puzzle. everything interacts

It just dawned on me do you know how close that spring is to the top of the shifter plate and or its diameter. I could drill a hole in the top and run a mill in to the spring to release the pressure and then pipe plug the hole. I think there’s enough beef their in the rail. So far I see that as my best shot unless it miraculously decides to move. thanks

I am going to play with this some more with the c clamp set up and check with a dealer if I have to. I brought in into a warmer house. Maybe I’ll take a picture to show people. This was obviously a recall as the book says replace with shorter spring on the retaining ball. If I could get it apart I could cut down the spring. Thanks
