I have a 1977 Case Backhoe with 2700 hrs. on it. The machine used to set alot. It was bought by my father brand new.
Lately, I have been hearing a noise coming from the intake, sort of like it"s blowing back through the intake. I took the air cleaner off and sure enough I could feel air blowing back, although, not a great deal. In addition to this it was lacking power. I spoke with a mechanic and he said it sounded like it might be the injector pump. I called the folks that rebuild these pumps and they said that pump had a seal that goes bad and can affect the timing. So I went ahead and had the pump rebuilt and put in new injectors. It runs a little better, but it is still blowing back through the intake and the power is not what it was. It is extremely had to start in cold weather, even though I have the block heater plugged in. It used to fire right up when it was plugged in. The engine idles smoothly and sounds good (except for the blow back noise) it accelerates good when not under a load. When it is under a load, the black smoke is really bad. It never did smoke like that when it was running good. If it had a bad valve I would think it would idle rough?
Could it be the head gasket? It does not lose any coolant or run hot. Oh by the way the timing marks on the injector pump are perfectly lined up. I did call the folks that rebuilt it and they suggested increasing the timing a little. It helped the power, but very little.
Does anybody have any idea what might be wrong?

I've never heard of an injection pump being able to provide the symptoms you've describe. A bad camshaft or a leaking valve will do it - not an injection pump. And, a bad cam lobe would be very rare in a Case 188/207. Now, a small block pre-1988 Chevy - yes. I have seen the pencil-injectors blow their teflon seals and then - air or exhaust rushes out of the every stroke and they make a noise - but - not from the intake.

I don't comprehend how a head-gasket can do it either. I've fixed many a bad head-gasket that did make such a noise at the leak area - but it was not sending it via the air-intake manifold. The intake manfifold is hooked to the intake valve passages and nothing else. So, normally, only a valve and seat leaking can create the situation - unless something is cracked or I'm missing something. Also, and engine assembled wrong with the valve timing WAY off can do it. In regard to a seal going bad in your Stanadyne injection pump ??? I assume you mean the advance piston and seals? Makes no sense to pull a pump off if that is suspected. It is easily checked with the engine running with a plastic timing window. And, if the advance was not working properly, it can often be fixed without removing the pump.

I forgot to mention that I had already checked the valve lash, and it was within tolerances.

sounds like intake valve too tight and compression leaking back into manifold. Set the valve lash and try again

I have the same backhoe and had the same problem. Mine was a blown head gasket between 2 cylinders. The head bolt that also holds the valve cover probably wasnt tightened down enough cause takes a special wrench. Its a pretty easy fix, just take the head off. There is a hole in one of the bolts for the rockers to get oil , dont put that in the wrong place when you put it back together.
