Thanks in advance for your help. I have a Case 400 LP Hi-Clear with a bad engine. I also have a Case 400 diesel row crop with a good engine. Will the diesel fit the Hi-Clear without major modifications, especially in the flywheel and clutch area?

If your diesel runs, why scrap it to make the High Crop run? You would loose money there that you already have. Better off selling it to finance a proper restoration of the LP engine.

O.K. guys. You win. I'll rebuild the LP engine and hope I can get the regulator rejuvenated. It's an Ensign and I don't know where to get a kit for it.
A question: Can someone tell me if the propane tank is supposed to be red or Desert Sunset? The one I bought from Ruscha had been painted green. The mag had been replaced with a distributor, but it runs O.K. with it.

On most propane fired units valves are the first things to go.I would try a wet compression test to determine what shape the engine really is.If the test shows that it is valves it will be a reasonably cheap fix.On a tractor of this vintage I would try to stay original as someday it will be worth a good chunk of change.

The propane system was removed from the Hi-Clear and a gasoline tank was installed. I don't know how long it was run on gasoline, but the engine is slobbering oil out through the exhaust. I found the right LP tank (1955) and a regulator & carb off a 400 LP that has been sitting for years. Don't know if the regulator is good. A rebuild will cost money that I don't have, however, I have the diesel engine. I know that I should be shot if I put the diesel engine in this tractor. Only 58 built and I don't know how many were LP out of the 58.

Easy change over. no majors at all. But can you justify taking a very very rare tractor and putting the wrong engine in it. The serial tag will tell on you. Don't do it.
