Helping a friend with his LA, before he bought it the guy had the carb and mag off to clean and repaint them.
It came in on a truck started right up, put it on his trailer to haul home, again started right up, run it up in the drive and it sputered and died.
He pulls the carb off and found nothing wrong, still won't start, will hit once in awhile if choked but then gas runs out the bottom of carb. I went into the carb, 1 float was bent and dragging, set them at 1 3/4" did many bench tests, fuel level stays the same. Got it started and run into his shop, again it died and has never run agin. Rechecked the carb and today put the carb on, checked timing was a few degrees slow, got it set on the money, "1 fires when D shows in the plug hole, but still only it fires 1 time, bendix kicks out each time.(bendix is weak) To much choke and it quits trying to start. Even tried a shot of stating fluid right into the intake manifold and that barely made a dif, maybe fired 2 times then.
Does this sound like a leaking intake valve?? Did run half as compression test, 50 to 75# each, temp was 23 degrees and fitting not real tight, but at least it told me no valve stuck open. Good gas flow to carb Good blue spark to plugs
Is it possiable that he got the butterfly in wrong on the carb? looks like a new one.
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, bob

I would check the small screen at the inlet of the carb mine was pluged tight with crud on my LAI, I fixed the mag problem by installing a distrebtor, now it seen to run lean at high speed but starts right up, DCDENNIS

Thanks for your help guys, you were in the right area. Finally had a good look at the points and the point arm was hanging up. That is why it would only fire 1 time, the lag from then till you hit the starter again the arm would have the points closed again for 1 more fire. Cleaned with carb cleaner, blew it out and she runs like a LA should.
Thanks again,
Bob

You got ,Blue spark, fuel ,and air ,She oughta Run ,, If carb has been tinkered with ,double chek all work ,,I fear the valves may be your culprit ,, Get the proper specs and a good gauge and check for differences at each cylinder,, My 54 SC kept Me for a fool, Fouled plugs ,Misfiring ,Sputtering out in a pull.,Always started good on all 4 and went to missing when it warmed up ,,The intake valves were in sorry shape ,, We simply swapped heads from a 42 SC, Now it runs like an Sc ,,Thats why I PREFER MY 53 DC BEST of ALL ,, Jim

Try changing the condenser in the mag, clean the points as per Wilson's instructions. You don't need a two wire condensor as long as it is grounded by the body clamp. LOL!
