Any VA series owners out there have a brake drum nut they wouldn't mind parting with ?
It has a 2 1/4" size hex head as shown in the photo. My right rear brake never really worked so when I removed the brake cover plate I noticed the nut was missing. The other side, pictured here, does have one.

Also, what do you guys use to turn that nut ? A plumber's wrench ?
Parts book shows a special tool, T-136 socket. Sure, like we all have that one in the box.
Thanks guys..... .

Hi Kestrel. That is not a nut. It is a big head of a large bolt, I think that bolt is hollow inside. It screws inside of the pinion shaft. It has been a few years since I studied it. I have two drums on my 51 VAI to remove. The brakes rusted to the drums and the wheels wouldn't turn. Also under the head is, supposed to be, a flat washer with ears that bend up against the flats of the head to lock it from turning. I got a socket for it from snap-on, surprised me, less than $25. There are others that have them. What it is, is a socket for the front axle nut on a 4X4 truck. They are deep to fit over the axle. Except for the lenth of it, it looks like the one you saw in the picture. On one end they are six sided to fit the bolt head and the other end is round with a cross bar with a square hole to fit a breaker bar. On the snap-on it takes a 3/4" drive. My 50 VAC has disk brakes, VAI had band brakes and in 52 the VAC went back to band brakes. Only the band brakes have the bolt and lock washer you need. I think the band brakes are harder to find. I am surprised the thing is holding together. Good luck. Charley.

Hi Kestrel. I forgot, the pinion shaft and the brake drum are splined. Thanks. Charley.

Hi Charley...thanks for the thorough explanation. Yeah, the spline was the only thing keeping the drum from falling off. I think the shoes wouldn't or couldn't grab the loosely hanging drum since the spline is not a tight fit at all.

Also looks like someone epoxied something soft in the hole to keep the fluid in. I read about an Expansion Plug but this looks like a home remedy. Anyway, I'll track down that socket you described & remove my remaining bolt/ locking washer for a match-up somewhere. Case service manual called it a brake drum nut but it's oddly not listed in my VAI parts book. And good luck with your '51.
