I'm new to this board, so thanks for the help. I have a 530 gas utility. I ran it a week or two ago, didn't want to start very well as the battery was down, but after it started, ran well. Today was another matter. Tractor is in a un-heated shed, 10 degrees outside. Motor wanted to fire, took air-intake pipe off of front of carb, a little gas ran out (flooded), took dist off, cleaned off contacts inside (they looked pretty good), took plug out, carbon on plug but had good spark when turning motor & plug grounded. Tried to use either in front of carb. Motor sputtered, almost started, BUT no-go. Didn't seem to matter where I had throttle or choke postioned. Starter was getting warm and I was getting cold! I'm sure that a overhaul isn't toooo far down the line, but engine did have fair suction when I put hand over carb intake. I took off gas line to carb, great flow. What do I need to do to get it started? Thanks.

Dave,
I had the same problem with it hard starting I put a set of new points & condencer in and rebuilt the carburetor. Now it starts good with out using the choke. One thing it does do is it frosts up on the intake throat bad when it cold runs ruff untill the engine gets warmed up.
Check your float level on carb may be starving for gas. Mike

It's not common, and they're normally dead reliable, but I HAVE had condensors die on me. One moment they're fine, the next dead. If the engine is running, it backfires like crazy until it stops. If it's not running, it will never start. That'll cause the points to burn up badly too, almost instantly.

How old is your gas? Old crappy gas doesn't like to burn very well in cold weather. I know my 630 floods very easy if it doesn't fire in the first few cranks. I add new plugs, wires, dist. cap and points and condenser and have had no problems since. Also make sure your battery is good and hot.

One of the best starting aids for cold tractors can be your wife's hair dryer. Remove the hose going into the carb and blow hot air at the air intake on carb while someone else cranks the engine (make sure you have help} Start like you would in warm weather.

Dave;
I few tips to help with cold weather starts.
First run a thinner oil. Like 5w20 or straight 10 weight.
Keep all battery and cable connections clean.
Keep battery charged. Even a few minutes on a battery charger will warm the battery and increase the cranking power.
Heat is the best remedy. Get heat to the engine however possible. Best solution is to use an electric heater to warm the coolant. Can be an exterior tank type heater or one that replaces one of the freeze plugs. Use a portable kerosene heater to blow warm air on the engine and manifold.
Use fresh gasoline. Winter blend gasoline vaporizes more readily than summer blend.
Use a hotter spark plug, equivilent to Champion D21. Keep them clean.
If it does not start on the first few minutes of trying, it will not likely start. The fuel vapors and raw fuel will only frost the spark plugs and foul them more.
Oil bath air cleaners should have thinner oil for winter use. I usually use 10w hydraulic oil or even Auto trans fluid. Make sure there is no water in the oil cup that will freeze and block off the air.
Hope some of these pointers help and you have many happy hours with your tractor this winter.... Gene

Sounds to me like oxidized points. Need serious filing to get them clean, check for continuity across the points then you know for sure.

Did you check the timing?

I wouldn"t think the timing is off, it was just running. All that has changed is it"s cold outside. If you have spark and it"ll fire, then
I would go with a fresh set of plugs.

It would"nt hurt to have the battery charged up so that it"ll crank good.
