Terratrac Steering??

I just got a parts book for my Case 320 TerraTrac.
It doesn't show any clutches for the Steering. Does it just depend on the brakes for steering? If the steering is hard does that mean the brakes are shot? Are the brake bands rebuild able?
Thanks
Dave Barker

30W or 40W non-detergent engine oil is all you need. You don't need an particularly special oil in that transmission. You just can't use anything with the EP additives. That means you don't use any GL5 transmission oil e.g. EP90, EP140, etc.
Clark manufactured that transaxle (Clark A-30) - it was used in many machines including Terratrac, Cletrac, Bombadier, small Case crawlers, wheel tractors e.g. General, Avery BF, etc. The modern oils rated EP (extreme pressure) permit the steering-brakes to slip and then the crawler won't steer.

Dave;
Yes, the steering is by the brakes stopping one side of the differential.

Hard steering may be one of several reasons.

First and easiest is adjusting the linkage. There are 2 adjustments, one on the outside of the differential with a nut and locknut on the pull rod fron the steering levers. Adjust these first to see if you get good brake on each side. If not go to step 2 adjustment. To do this you will have to remove the rear cover from the differential. The oil will have to be drained before removing the cover. A tip here is to back the rear of the dozer onto blocks so the oil runs to the front and don't have to drain as much out. Unbolt the cover and you will see a rod connecting to each brake shoe with a threaded end and jam nut and clevis end with a pin and cotter key. Remove the pin and thread the rod to a shorter length. It helps if you loosen the outside adjustment before youreinstall the pins.
Another cause for hard steering in glazed brake shoe bands. Using the wrong gear oil will cause the bands to glaze and lose their friction capability. YOU MUST USE GL-1 MINERAL OIL ONLY.

Last cause is just plain worn out. George Miller on this site may have a source for relining these as I soppose the supply of new ones has long been exhausted.... Gene

Thankyou for the info. Do you have a product name for that Gear oil? My supplier doesn"t have it. How many gallons does it require?
Thanks Dave Barker

Dave;
The oil I have is Shell Dentax 80-W-90. I don't know the exact capacity, but I still have about 2 gallons left in my 5 gallon bucket.

My local tractor supply store carries the same oil in their Traveller brand. It is plainly marked GL-1 mineral oil... Gene

Dave;
Another thing I did while I had the cover off was to drill and tap a hole in the cover and installed a 3/4 inch pipe street ell to make adding oil much easier... Gene
