While doing some rear end work on my 1956 VAI, I decided to finally troubleshoot the complete lack of seat shock absorption.

Anyone out there know how this contraption is suppose to work ? There are two large rubber gromments intact underneath the seat. The seat slides up when I pull on it but then falls and comes to rest against its frame when I let go, metal against metal.

There is a rusted "mystery handle" under the seat but so far the Kroil hasn't unfrozen it.
Any ideas what this handle does ? Tension adjuster ? Thank you...

I rebuilt a VAC seat last year. Got new rubbers from Don Livingston. 507-433-0073 mornings. Oliver had similar set up.

I have one like this on a VAC I drug out of the weeds awhile back. My JD has a similar deal which I have rebuilt and it works very well. The idea is to get enough tension between the "rubbers" to hold you up. The trick is to get that adjusting handle un-frozen. You may be able to do it with the torch, but don"t melt or ignite the rubber (it"s hard to put out and guaranteed to set off every smoke alarm for miles). If you decide to rebuild it, it will be well worth your time. It ain"t hard, this one is a LOT simpler than the JD system.
If you rebuild, keep us some pictures on how it goes, I am getting ready to do mine pretty soon and I like to learn from other"s experiances!

Soldier Tom, I have backed off on tension and increased tension on the similar set up on my 630 seat. It doesn't flex no matter how much I turn the adjusting screw either way. (I weigh about 240# so its not because I am a light weight like I was back when I started driving our SC with the easy ride seat.) My 630 seat acts just like the SC did when I was 8 years old.

I know that as rubber ages it continues to cure and get harder. I guess this 1960 rubber has just gotten too hard and I need to get a new set from John Saeli. Opinions??

Great advice about not igniting the rubber parts. I can see now how that could get real messy in a hurry, especially for someone with little torch experience like me. Sure, I'll be glad to keep you apprised with photographic reports. And thanks to others here about Don Livingston and this high-end luxury seat model. I feel important now..... ..

LEFT Hand Threads on seat adjusting stud!!!! in reply to Kestrel in CT , 01-23-2007 14:34:36
It is a correct Case seat...it was an optional "Easy Ride" seat
It is in the parts manual

I think the threaded shaft you are talking about is VTA3341 Seat Adjusting nut with LEFT HAND thread
maybe why it won't turn for you
Check with Don Livingston for parts

My 200 (211b) has a similar seat. I think the pedestal mount is different but I know it is an original Case seat. We bought it new in 1960. (It was a 59 model). I've never really paid much attention to the adjustments on it.

well wether ir come off a case i dont know, but it works by tension on the 2 rubber cone shaped pieces, there should be a long threaded rod with a "T" knob on one end,it should run either left to right or right to left, and it is attached to the metal disks on one end of the rubber cones. that rod is what adjusts the seat but only if the 2 rubber cones are in decent condition and that they are still attached firmly to the metal end pieces, when the rubber gets old enough it starts to seperate and not work so well, hope this helps the Docter

Thanks Doc
I suspected that handle had something to do with it. The rubber is quite crusty, kinda loose, but mostly intact. The threaded handle is so badly rusted it may never free up.
More penetrant and coaxing from the torch- we'll see. Nothing to lose here, especially operator comfort.

That seat looks like it might have come from an Oliver tractor. Is it orginal on Case???

Good question. My Case shop manual shows a completely different seat for the VAI and I don't know the history of this particular tractor.

It's sure possible it was cannibalized off something else. Any ideas welcome. Here is another photo.

Hi. This is an Oliver seat not a Case. Works like the Case but has some diffirent parts. The tighter you turn that stuck rod, the tighter it makes the rubbers and the more weight it holds up. Min-Kota is one company that makes and sells the rubbers. Not cheap. Bostrom made those seats, same company that makes truck seats. Charley.

Hi. Sorry, I may be wrong on this seat. I have only seen one of these on a VAC and maybe a picture. It is a little diffirent than my 300 and 600B seat. It does look a lot like an Oliver. The rest of what I said is correct. Thanks. Good luck. Charley.
