The Photo ad of the implement seat off a Case potato planter got me to thinking about this subject again as it bothers me often.
Wouldn't it be nice to see some of those old implements restored instead of stripped of seats, tool box lids, planter lids, or what have you? Many times I've come across nice old restorable implements in the tree rows except they are always missing all the nameplate items needed to restore them.
You see tractor and steam engine parts such as smoke box doors, steps and etc. for sale also, but usually because the engine has long been scraped. The big difference I see is that the implements are still out there and have been stripped and left for dead and unrestorable as is.
Any time I see Case seats, planter lids or drill box ends for sale at the swap meets, my first thought is always, where's the rest of the implement and isn't it a shame its been wrecked for the harvest of one or two parts.
It's nice someone saves a few pieces if a machine is being scrapped anyway, but what bothers me is that too many guys are robbing these parts, most of the time without permission, just to make a few bucks while our mechanical ag history goes down the toilet.
My comments are in no way a personal attack on the man in the ad. It's just that the ad got me to thinking again about the subject and how the collecting has gotten to be an industry focused on profits rather than preserving history.

Case History,I"m in agreement with you.And I feel the same, right now as I type this out on my farm after removing trees out of the rightaway, right out for everyone to see now is a old sickle mower,I didnt have time to get it out of there before winter settled in,so it is there with the seat still on it!!Will see how long that stays!Anyway, yes my thoughts are to sell old tillage equipment, not allot of money in it but, will save some of this, because one thing you can take to the bank is the scrappers are cutting this up in am alarming rate.I talk to a scrapper that I know and said call me when you got Case,he has already told me that he will have some for me right away in the spring. So all you guys need to talk to scrappers,in many cases they dont want to cut up good equipment, just get thier scrap value. This guy for example, cutup get this old 2 lunger gas engines! He said in his business he doesnt have time to monkey with it!

I agree you guys. Been working on tractors all my life. A couple of years ago, a young high school guy drove up to my house and said that he had heard that I rebuild tractors. His grandpa had given him his ggpa's two horse "stalk cutter" and wanted to know if I would give him some pointers on rebuilding it. Long story, he rebuilt the cutter, painted, put a tounge in it and carried it to a local tractor show. Now, he has a JD #4 riding sickle mower, rebuilt & painted, a Peterson riding cultivator, rebuilt & painted. This weekend he came over and told me that he had a Case 2row planter that he was going to rebuild. All of his projects are horsedrawn equipment. I guess he is a one of a kind, but I sure respect him for trying to save some of the old horse drawn equipment. I take my hat off to him for doing so. He's always looking for the old stuff, so I look also for the horse drawn equipment for him.
