Case 430
With the hand clutch can you switch gears while the main clutch is out and its disengaged? Say in the case of pulling a baler. You disengage the hand clutch to get the baler going and then pull up on hand clutch. But can you switch gears say if you were going to fast by just disengaging the hand clutch or do you have to start the process over again? I only ask this because our tractor will creep with the hanbd clutch disengaged still. Paul

430 hand clutch. in reply to Paul in On, 01-15-2007 21:53:50
The hand clutch on 430's etc. is basically designed to stop forward or rearward motion. If you're quick with the hand, it's possible to change gears (up or down) without much gear grinding. The multiple clutch disks in the hand clutch do NOT fully disengauge. There will always be some friction, hence a possible slight creep with disengaugement on level hard ground. It's still better than nothing when you're using it on a baler or PTO equipment that needs forward motion stopped every now and then, or you want to change gears without stopping the PTO.

Hello Paul. I have a 311b with a rotary mower (some call it a bush hog) on the Eagle Hitch and I have good luck with disengaging the hand clutch under a load, letting forward motion stop, then stepping on the foot clutch and quickly changing gears either forward or reverse. Here again if you miss the shift an end up in neutral you need to stop and start over.
