Case 830 speedo and tach cables.

Looks like I am going to be able to use the speedo and tach now that the inputs on each have been "freed up". Who knows how long they have been stuck.

What I have found though, is that the speedo cable is broken. It appears, however, that the broken end fell into the transmission, or someone already pulled it out. It wasn't there when I took the slip nut off.

What is puzzling me now is that it looks like the fittings that both the speedo and tach cables fit into are far larger than the square ends of the cables, therefore, the tach drive spins, but the square end of the cable just sits there with the drive spinning around it. It looks the same on the speedo side. The square end of the cable would be far smaller.

Is there supposed to be some kind of larger fitting crimped onto the end of the cable? It looks like someone wrapped the end of the tach cable with aluminum foil to make it bigger, but when the tack stuck, the foil just got eaten up.

I read in the archives that some folks get tach cables from NAPA. I would think this is some kind of universal kit? If so, does it come with the larger ends to fit in the speedo and tach drives? Or are mine perhaps merely "wallowed" out from the drive spinning around on a stuck cable?

Thanks for any info.

I need to find a good source for parts. The Case dealer in Albuquerque is heavy equipment, not much AG tractor knowledge, and 170 miles away. The closest Case dealer to the north is in Colorado, and still around 100 miles away...they don't return phone calls or emails.

I checked with Huber's (I think it's called) online, and the repair kits..core/cable, end, and staking tool runs $20.00 each through them. If they are basically the same as an automotive cable, then they can be had much cheaper..

That's why I am wondering about the end that goes into the speedo and tach drive. If they are a special size, then the Case kits are it. If the drives are screwed up and wore out inside...then it's a differenct course of action.

I had the same problem on my tractor It appears your cable is now several inches short why not replace the cable I picked up a used cable from a junked bicycle shortened one end with a file works fine if the ends are smoll apply a little solder file flat apply wd40inside cable housing may clean up your problem

The soldering idea might just work. Seems I remember having to do something like that to the speedo cable on a 1959 Chevy Apache pickup...nearly 20 years ago! The memories!

Now that the sun has been up awhile and it's up to 25 degrees outside, I will have to go outside and measure the square cable end and see how wide it is..

On my 830 (diesel), I haven't replaced the speedo cable, yet, but the tach required replacing the drive gear. The end of the cable was a square shaft, about 1/8" on a side. If the tach gauge were dragging, I can imagine that the end of the cable could have gotten worn away, or worse, the drive eaten out inside. (on mine it just twisted up the cable inside and snapped it apart)

That "1/8" on a side" sounds about right for the cable end I have, but I can see that when I insert the end into the tach drive, it's quite I bit smaller than the hole it fits into. Hence the aluminum foil that someone wrapped around the end. I can see the end of the drive merrily spinning away when the engine is running, right around the cable end, which doesn't move a bit. Maybe the hole the cable fits into on the drive gets smaller further in?

The odd thing is that it would appear on this tractor that if both the tach and speedo drives were eaten out inside, they were eaten out about the same, which would seem impossible...

However, I don't have the drive end of the speedo cable to look at, since it was already broken away along with a couple of inches of the end of the cable, and is missing.

I'm not all that concerned about having an operable speedo. But a tach would be pretty useful.
