I haven't seen too many VACs, but almost every VAC I have had a close look at(including mine)has had the block (water jacket)broken on the left side. Mine was fixed by my dad with alot of weld, and its not too serious. Was there a weakness here, or something else?
I should say I live in Ohio, and freezing probaly did it. Mine is a 1949.
Thanks

I have nine case tractors, three d`s,one cracked. Five va series, three cracked. One three hundred, you guessed it cracked. Seems to be the weakest spot in the block. J B weld worked just fine sealing up the 311. Rick

A few years ago I was given a VA, literally in a basket. The web inside the block was broken, even worse the renaining parts were in a "basket" rusted solid. By chance a junker came by, and I purchased an engine from a M2 CASE combine. With very little work it ran beatifully, also giving the 48 VA a live hydrualic pump.

To add to Alberta Mikes's story. It was almost 3 years that I searched for an engine to install in this otherwise cute little VA. And my friend Mike has this lead about two VA hulks. I pick them up, happier than the proverbial pig. The engines are both stuck for sure and I use one of the blocks to rebuild mine but you know the other block (which has only one piston stuck) had been welded!! And also on the left side. Interesting you say? But hey I've got all these parts. And my VA is looking mighty fine. Will get the final tune-up done in the spring (Is cold here in Alberrrrrta at the moment) and get Abe and the rest of the decals on. Grand-daughter Jenna loves to drive it around the yard. By the way, mine was a 49 as well. Now has a 48 block.

Is Ginger the thing to use? Someone else mentioned using pepper. Is anything wrong with the product BARSLEAKS?

A few years ago, I bought a set of tires from a guy with two 'basket case' VA's. I used the 28" tires on my Massey and sold the rims. Years later, a buddy of mine has a VA given to him, brand new tires, pretty good shape, and he's in heaven. Then, you guessed it, broken out in the place you described. Well, I keep all my phone numbers, and last summer I call the guy (Wes) and he's still got the 'hulks' of 2 VA's, both 'stuck' but otherwise sound. My buddy buys both for $150 CANADIAN (we're talking $100 US) and my friend Stan hauls them away. He has since rebuilt the engines, has a thousand parts, and all for $150 Cdn, now that's a deal. When we left Wes' farm, he said "Imagine someone paying me $150 to haul away my junk". Yup, there seems to be a weak spot on those VA's alright, ask my friend.
