Gearbox oil....

I'm trying to redue a case plow...trip...Question :: what makes oil turn into TAR or THAT THICK anyway ?? I took the gearbox apart [what was in it didn't want to come out of the drain plug ] and found what looks like tar...I'm sure it's ooold oil....What makes oil get that thick ?? THANKS for any and ALL advice....Mark

Over time all or at least most of the lighter ends of the lube oil eveporate. Time, heat and lack of pressure (that from which it was subjected to in the producing formation from whence it came) liberate these liquids just like gasoline evaporates when spilled. All that is left is the heavyer asphaltines that remain in the oil after it is refined from crude oil.

THANK YOU....So if I get it clean up and put new oil in ....it should last awhile...or does it need to be change....only going to use the plow to do some FUN plowing... THANKS again....Mark

Probably wouldn't hurt to change it every 3-4 years. Oil is cheaper than parts that are almost impossible to find now.
