I have a 530, a 800, and a 830 that are all gas. Each these tractors run great full throttle and under load but at idle they all seem to flutter and don't run very smooth. I have gotten the heads redone on two of them as well as adjust the valves and carbs but nothing seems to work. Is this just how they were made or is there a trick to getting them to smooth out?

Check for wear in the distributor shaft. Put a timing light on it and check that it stays the same place while idling. I have seen them worn that bad that it jumps all around.

We've got a 430 and 730 that are both gasoline models, and they will idle absolutely fine. I'd agree with dwag that there may be carb problems, or possibly even an intake manifold leak. I've had to deal with each of these problems on different tractors and once corrected, they idled very smooth.

With carb apart, the lower half, between float housing and venturi bore, make sure the 2 small holes are not plugged by using "tag wire" and air gun. One hole goes down to mainjet and is usually plugged. These tractors should idle as good as any. Only other cause may be an intake manifold leak.

I agree with the others but find it quite ironic that ALL three do the exact same thing. Also check things that are common to all three, ie bad gas , same person setting points , old wires on all , same K-Mart plugs in all , well , you get the picture. Post back when cured , would like to hear the results. Thank You.
