I have a 1948 VAC with adjustable wide front end. It most likely needs major engine work (I drained about 2 gallons of antifreeze out of the oilpan). I have a chance to buy a 1951 VAC that runs. Will the 1948 wide front fit the 1951 tractor? Or would the 1951 engine fit the 1948 tractor? Which way would you go? Thanks in advance for your replies.
Ben

I bought the VAC today. Serial # is 5471776. It runs pretty good. Sheet metal is rough. One pretty good rear tire and both rims look ok. The bolt hole is broke out on the left side in the rear end housing that holds the drawbar. I would like to fix up the one with eagle hitch and put the adjustable wide front end on, but I will probably try to find another rear end housing first. The sheet metal on the 1948 one is pretty good.
Thanks for your help,
Ben

That would be an early 1951 VAC and all parts should readily swap. Be careful on the rear end. You need one that came with an Eagle Hitch or you will have no place to mount the rack shaft. Depending upon where you are I have a housing I would sell. I am in western Wisconsin.

Jerry,
I'm in southwestern Indiana. I'm going to check a couple of places tomorrow. I'm not in a big hurry. Probably won't work on it until spring.
Thanks,
Ben

Jerry,
I was told last night the 1951 has eagle hitch. It runs, but needs the governor worked on. It has some kind of combine axle under the front end. I hope to look at it over the weekend and will get the serial number. If the serial number is higher than 5570000 would the engine fit into the one we already have? I bought a parts book off of ebay, Case VA & VAC parts list number 61, but it does not show the adjustable wide front end. I would rather but our adjustable wide front end on the eagle hitch tractor if possible.
Thanks,
Ben

My RIE61 shows the VAC Adjustable Front End before #5570000 on pages 94-95.

Sam

There is early and late adjustable wide fronts and the split is 5570000. Earlier than this and they are I beam construction and later they are telescoping tube. 2 totally different beasts and the early one has the steering box under the cowl and the later one has it in the front bolster.

Yes, I agree. The one in my reference is an I-beam and the tubular is shown on pages 96-97. The steering gear assemblies are shown on pages 80 and 82 respectively.
This catalog I have seems to completely cover the VA series. Sometimes it takes some digging to get the parts and serial numbers matched.

Ebay strikes again.
Purchased mine from the local Case dealer a couple years ago. It looks like a contract reprint complete with a Case-IH logo. It has 142 pages with exploded views and the original part numbers. About $20 as I recall.
Good luck with your project.

Sorry I forgot on the other post. I would move the 1948 frontend to the 1951 if it is an early one - especially if the 51 has the Eagle Hitch.

If the serial number of the 1951 is less than 5570000 it will bolt right up. Major changes in steering and sheet metal occurred with that serial number.
