I bought a 1970 Case 580 ck diesel to move snow. The engine was rebulit a short time ago and runs great but the power shuttle leaks oil till it won't move and upon refilling it moves fine but leaks oil from the starter motor. Does anyone know of this being a common problem? Are there any suggestions before I split the tractor and get into the torque converter and clutch assembly for the power shuttle? I have a Case 430 industrial tractor with a manual shuttle, are there any 580 parts tractors out there that I could use to convert my machine to a manual unit? Thanks, Chip.

No, it's not a common problem. I've had my 580CK for over 22 years and the Power Shuttle has always been reliable and certainly very functional when it comes to using the loader or pushing snow. The flywheel & starter nose gear is running in the Torque converter/Shuttle housing therefore it's exposed to splashing oil. The starter has a gasket sealing it to the housing and it has an o-ring sealing the armature shaft. Both are easy to inspect and repair if necessary.
The manual shuttle has a manual dry friction clutch and it's own wear and tear potential problems. If you use the machine as a loader very much the power shuttle is not only faster and tougher but the torque convertor also prevents impact damage to the transmission geartrain when running hard into the dirt pile, sort'a like a torque cushion between the high reving engine and the wheels.
You've got the better (optional) system but it certainly needs the oil leak fixed before the oil pump gets damaged.
