electrical problems on a Case 311?

I just rebuilt the starter on my 311. It won't turn over, all I get is the 'click." So I start poking around and find that this thing is 12 volt with a postive ground. Is that right?

If so, how do I boost the battery? Any suggestions to check for getting this thing running? I may need to plow snow very soon.

Turns out that the stud going into the starter broke as a I tightened all the connections. The starter shop fixed that & all is right with the world again.

You always charge batteries + to + and - to -. Usually the - is ground but not always. With standardization of the - being ground we have kind of forgotten the basics of electricity.

The battery does not know which of its' leads goes to ground but believe me the whole system does.

Hi Chuck; The 311 had the 12 volt systems on some of their 300's, the generator was Auto-lite GHH-00A or Auto-lite VRT-4105 they used two 6v battery's hooked togather to form 12V. If you have a R.I.324 parts book you can see it on pg.60- I think it was still positive ground. The battery tray is made large enough to hold two battery's, mostly used on the 301 diesel tractor.
Hope this helps to clarify things. Roger

Mine is a 6 volt positive ground.
Yours must have been converted to twelve volt
because I don't think they came that way when new.
Charge the battery like any other.
Red cable to positive post.
Black cable to negative post.
For safety from battery sparks, you can put your red cable on a bolt head or any part of tractor frame for your ground away from the battery.
BE SURE YOU DON'T HAVE A SIX VOLT BATTERY before giving it a 12 volt boost!!!
Good Luck.

Thanks, guys. I will tackle this again on Saturday. Temps should be in the 40"s again. I"ve ordered the service manual, and have talked this over with the parts guys at the local tractor dealership. They believe this should be a negative ground system (they had another 311 on the grounds & I looked it over yesterday).

I"ll trickle charge the battery, try another in it"s place and see where that takes me. The sloenoid might be bad, too. I hate trouble shooting electrics.
