Thanks for the help yesterday with my question about removing the shifter cover on my Case 430 triple range. Now for the ugly part--what if I can't get the triple range to go into neutral? What will happen when I remove the cover if it's in Drive? Thanks again.

Mea culpa!! Boy do I feel stupid. I went back and read your original post. You were asking about the Triple Range gear box itself and I was thinking transmission. My Triple Range works like a champ and I have never had the cover off. I just had a transmission cover problem. My transmission/diferential housing had about 6 qts of water in it and I took off the transmission cover and 3pt system cover to clean and flush.

When finished I buttoned up the 3pt cover and just dropped the transmissio cover in place to keep dirt and stuff out before I got the gear lube. I had the cover problem when I trid to take it off again to fill it with oil. Figured it would be easier to dump a 5 gallon pail into a big oneing rather than athe small dip stick/filler opening. THat's when the trouble started.

Sorry for the confusion. DO you have a parts list with pictures? I could scan and post the appropriate pages from mine to help you out if you need them.

Lift the cover off and check the gears for freedom of movement, also check the forks to see if parts all look in place and work. When time to put the cover back on put the forks and the grooves in the transmission gears in a position that they go togather as you lower the lid and everything will work as it should if there wasn't any damaged parts etc. Roger

In some gears the shift rails will be moved backward or forward enough so as to catch under the differential housing lip and make it near impossible to get the cover off. In neutral they are positioned for a straight up lift.

If this has happened or happens the cover can carefully be pried up, a brass rod, wooden dowel or small (12") nail bar can be place against the offending rod or rods and pried or hammered back into the neutral position.

If this sounds like the voice of experience IT IS. It took me about half a day and a couple of flashlights and a Black & Decker snakelight to finally see what was wrong and then shift the rails to neutral so the cover could be lifted off.
