Just purchased a Case 830, with rear blade, yesterday for our road association. I have noticed a couple of situations: There are two levers to the right of the seat. One raises and lowers the blade. The other, I think, is supposed to tilt the blade? When I operate it, there is a very loud "buzzing" noise that comes from the valve area below the back of the seat, and nothing happens.

Also, the lever down low to the left of the seat, I believe, is supposed to turn the PTO on and off. It appears the PTO is stuck "on", regardless of the position of this lever.

Could these issues be related? Are they relatively easy fixes? Thank you for any info you might offer.

My 830 is a 1964 model with Eagle hitch an as others said far right leaver controls remote coupler on tractor-same pressure eighter way leaver is moved. Inside leaver operates Eagle hitch as sent from factory .HOWEVER that valve has only limited pressure when held partially back an if you move leaver fully back it should stay there an is in float position with cylinder able to move up an down on its own. Also pto leaver should be pushed down enough to engage pto brake. It should stop an than lock with.. movable plate on handle. If not you will need to adjust length of rod conetted to handle. This assumes all is well inside with brake. Best tractor ever!!!!! !!

The pto has a clutch pack that maybe stuck or the linkage is broke and it is stuck in gear. When you pull up on the "T" handle on the left side, does it feel like something engages? It should have quite a bit of pull to "snap" it over center and engage the pto. When I was a kid my dad would set the clutch pack so tight I had to get off the seat and pull it up with both hands. The hydraulic problem sounds like you might have the hoses hooked on the same circuit. You should have 4 outlets in the back, two on each side(or you might just have 2 outlets, if you just have two disregard the rest of this). The hydraulic hoses have to be connected properly to be in the same circuit. Use the top outlet(or the bottom) on each side for a complete circuit.

Thanks again for all the information. I just went outside and checked the "pull" of the T-handle, and it definately feels like it's engaging something. It has the same "breakover" feel just as "630crazy" described.

Then I did a little experiment. Without even starting the tractor, I turned the PTO shaft by hand, and found that I could spin it slowly. I then made sure the tranny was in gear and spun it again. Same thing, I could spin it slowly. Then I engaged the T-handle, and found I could no longer spin the shaft by hand. This leads me to believe that everything is probably working right, and that I am just experiencing the kind of cold-weather action some of you all described. It has been getting down to the single digits here at night.

As for the blade hydraulics. It is a manual blade, and there is nothing connected to the quick-disconnects. So my guess, based on all of your information, is that once again everything is working right and that my inexperience is merely showing.

I really appreciate all of your insight and information. The more I look at this tractor, the more fascinated I am by the "tank like" construction of the thing. They really built these things to last! I am impressed by the amount of cast iron and solid steel rod that I am finding. Seems like the only sheet steel I am finding is the cowlings, and the seat!

Cary, can you post digital photos of your new rig. Overall of tractor and blade so we all can admire it and front, back and both sides of the blade with it on the tractor could probably allow most of us to size up the manual adjust vs hydraulics problem and ofd pointers here. 630crazy and I were discussing blades and what's good what's not just yesterday evening.

I sure can post some photos..all of us on the informal road "committee" communicate mostly by email, so I have plenty of digital photos and can make more. It looks like I have to link to an outside site for photo viewing? Or can I post them directly here somehow?

In fact, there are some photos posted already at:

Link

That's our subdivision website.

One thing I have noticed is that if I run the blade down too low, the upper link of the 3-point interferes with the levers coming out of the top of the hydraulics valve body, jamming them in the down position. The tractor came with an adapter that bolts over the PTO which allows for another link point, but if we mount the loader, we can't use it. I don't remember if the pump body for the loader has a link point as well.

Yep, you have a fully manual adjustable blade and looks like the tractor has 4 hydraulic remotes on it. The top link you have is an after market variety. The 830 came with an offset kind to avoid the interference. Take a look on ebay at; Item number: 300057948042 This is the proper Case top link for the 830, If the link is pinned to the upper point and positioned with the offset up it will probably miss the hydraulic control linkage. Just what you wanted, something else to buy!

You could probably forego the pump for the loader and hook directly to the tractor hydraulics since you have 4 remote points. If you really want to use the loader pump, I think the loader pump can be mounted on the front power point. I have seen some done like this and it looks like in the photos you have a mounting point and the power take off coupling is cover by a little bolt on guard. The pump was used on tractors that only had 2 remotes so as not to occupy the remotes in case they were needed for a rear mounted implement.

Good looking old 830. Ours was a standard non adjustable wheel variety. Also looks like some one has converted your eagle hitch arms to the modern kind. (Substandard I think, but you can't always have everything!)

Thanks for the kind words. This is the first ag tractor I have had any personal experience with. Our voluntary road fund is based on donations and I figure we got a pretty good deal at $2500 cash for the tractor and blade.

Yup, that top link came right off the Indonesian boat and was still in the cellophane a couple days ago.

I just got back from taking some measurments from the loader. Does "Farmhand" and what looks like a model number "F11B" mean anything to you?

I wanted to make sure everything would fit. The loader has mounting brackets which bolt to the rear axle and place the upright arms about 1 foot in front of the rear axle. Then there are some arms which come down at approx. a 45 degree angle from the top of the rear uprights, and are 74" long. It looks like I would have to fabricate a mounting point up front somewhere, using the bolt holes in the sides of the tractor.

Went outside just now and took a look for the front PTO power point you mentioned, but I don't know what I am looking for and didn't find one.

If I use the tractor hydraulics, do I then have to operate the second lever on the tractor at the same time as the levers on the loader? Or is there a hydraulic point that has constant pressure? The less moving parts, the better, I figure. Plus, we are going to have several folks volunteering to do road work, and I want it to be as simple as possible.

I just got outbid on a service manual and steering wheel center on Ebay, so I will have to check out the top link you mentioned as well! Thanks for the heads up.

Now that I think about it I believe you are right. You would have to operate the two handles at the ame time and that is not a good way. The only loader tractor we had was a little Ford 861 and it had a pump located on the front of the engine connected to the crankshaft located just below the fan blade. I believe the 830 has a location on the front of the tractor.

Look for mounting points just below the grill screens on the front of the tractor. I see a hole and what look like threaded mounting holes in the casting. In side the big hole I see what looks like a cover for an internal spline. Looks like it has 3 bolts to take it off. Check this out. Can you post a photo of your hydraulic pump on your site? Call Farmhand or a Farmhand dealer and mke sure that loader is compatible with the 830. Not all loaders fit all tractors. Farmhand makes a good loader, but you need to make sure it is compatible with the tractor.

I am going to look at my 630 tonight and see what it looks like. Completely different tractor, but it may have some similarities.

I saw where I can post some photos on this site, so I will take a few close-ups tommarrow in the daylight and post them.

It appears the rear brackets for the loader are there, they bolt to the rear axle housing. The arms which head toward the front look like they will mount alongside the motor, but I might have to fabricate the mounting brackets. I saw a photo today on the internet of the same model loader on a John Deere, and could see the brackets which appear to be missing on this one, unless the fellow has them in one of his sheds at the equipment yard. I sent an email to AGCO/Farmhand today to see what they have to say.

I looked at my 630 last night and also the parts list to see if they pointed out and dedicated lace to mount a secondary hydraulic pump, but there was nothing shown and I don't have the same arrangement on the front of my tractor.

I also posted a message to 630crazy, one of my Case pen pals, his folks also had 830s and 930s. He has not answered but "CHess" has and reiterated his message in THIS string. He gave complete instructions on how to hook the loader hydraulics into the Case sytem to make it operate independently of the remote hydraulic lever. Using his instructions you can hook up to the tractor hydraulics and operate the loader off its resident controls AND use a rear mounted implement with a hydraulic cylinder as well since the loader and implement would operate independently.

My second post with CHess comments is on the forum's first page right now and starts "630crazy-Loader on 830". I think CHess' instructions will fix you up.

Thank you for all the information, it really helped. We had spent a good chunk of our road fund on the tractor to buy the thing, based on entirely my input. I was worried that I was going to have to make a bunch of expensive repairs.

The info made perfect sense as far as the hydraulics are concerned. There is a set of hoses with some kind of "quick disconnect" fittings on them mounted to the rear, and one hose is disconnected and plugged with a pipe plug in the "valve body" (correct term?). Maybe the fitting was leaking, so someone plugged it.

The PTO is maybe another story. Is the lever to the left of the seat the PTO brake? Or the lever which turns it on and off? (I need to get a manual for this thing!) No matter which position it is in, the PTO turns. I did grab the PTO with a leather gloved hand, at a REAL low idle, and wasn't able to stop it no matter which position that particular lever was in.

Thanks again for the info! I am pretty ignorant when it comes to tractors so I am learning new stuff every day.

You have the right lever. As I recall its a T type handle; pull up to engage, down to stop. We never had a problem with our 830 or SC with regard to the PTO clutch/brake and my 630 does not have the same arrangement so my manual would be of no help, but I believe I read in this forum that the clutch does have some kind of adjustment. You may try searching in this forum on Case live PTO and see if anything turns up, or maybe someone else can answer that has had this experience. (630Crazy if you read this do you have any ideas, you all had 830s and 930s I beleive).

As for the blade and hydraulics, I believe if you hook the hydraulic hose back up you will find 2 things:
1. Why it was unhooked.
2. Whether the hydraulic blade adjusters work or not.

If the tractor hydraulics make noise when you pull the handle its not the tractor, its working fine.

If there is a Mfg.s plate on the blade, I would contact them and see if they have a book on it you can buy, if not, help answer your questions on the operation of it.There are 830 manuals on ebay all the time.

Don't give up on the 830, it was one of the best tractors we ever had. About a 63 model, Eagle hitch, diesel, dual range transmission and plenty of power. It should do a good job for you.

If the PTO is not needed for anything, just let're turn until you can figure out how to adjust or fix the clutch.

Based on the serial number, I think this is an "early" 1960's model 830 as well. I am sure not giving up on it. We spent over half of our admittedly paltry voluntary road fund on it. We've got to make it work, and based on the practice grading I have done in the alley next to my house, it's going to work fine once I get used to it.

I am impressed by the sheer bulk of it's construction every time I see something from a different angle. It seems it was really built to last! It's like a tank. I don't think I've seen that much cast iron in one place for a long time. We're going to move this one down to a remote New Mexico land subdivision for road work, but I already want to get one of my own!

As for the PTO, we might just be utilizing it if we get the front-end loader that the same fellow I got the tractor from has for sale. It has a pump that bolts onto the PTO.

JGarner is right on about the controls. The 830 should have a pto brake to stop the pto from turning which might not be working very well.

Stopping the pto shaft with your hand is a bit of a safety issue to me, but suit yourself.

JGarner is right about everything. I doubt there is anything wrong with your tractor. Those old tractors have little individual quirks. My 630 pto spins in the off position till it gets really warmed up. Make sure there are hoses hooked up to the remotes before operating the lever closest to the fender on the right hand side.

The two levers that are below the right hand side of the seat are for the 3pt and remote hydraulics. Is the blade one that has hydraulic adjust? MOST blades are manual, there area few high dollar blades that are hydraulically adjustable, but very few.

If the blade is hydraulically adjustable are the hydraulic lines hooked up to the tractor remotes? Your description sounds like you are activating the remotes against a closed system. When doing the a loud chatter is heard as the system tries to pump against closed ports.

Our 830 had a live PTO with a wet clutch. When the weather was cold or the syetm at ambient temperature there would be enough drag to cause the pto to turn, but would not turn a drive shaft ('53 SC did this too). With the lever in the off or pushed down position and the engine idling try to stop the PTO shaft with your hand. If you can the system is normal. If it were stuck in the engaged postion you would not be able to stop it.

Hope this helps.
