311 starting problem

1957 Case 311 Roundnose.

From time to time now when I go to start the tractor, and turn the key, I simply get only a "click" noise. I let go of the key, try once more, and again just a click when the key is turned to start.

After I turn it 3 to 30 times, the tractor will start right up.

What part is dying?

Thanks,

Mine does the same thing. I can almost always trace it back to a bad connection at the battery terminals, the ground, or the selinoid. On this tractor I have to keep all of the conections squeaky clean and very tight or she won't start.

It may also be the starter solenoid that is mounted next to the starter motor. If the contacts in the solenoid are bad, the key switch will operate the solenoid and make a clicking sound, but the high amperage contacts inside will not send the battery current to the starter.

Have you tried by-passing the switch and jumping it across at the starter? It this works, it could be the switch.
