Hey, I know this is a tractor forum, but I have a serious problem with "pocket gophers". Would you guys refer me to a source of plans to build a propane system (bomb). I would also listen to success stories of other types of working gopher control.

Al

Hi; I also used the exhaust from my tractor, lately a Case 300. Purchased a piece of flexible exhaust from NAPA and put the end on the tractor exhaust then in the varmints hole and put some dirt around it to make tighter, works great. Have used it for ground hogs, rats, under the milk house and lately a persistant skunk that wanted to perfume up the place most nights. In my alfalfa fields I would have a blade on the back to smooth over the hole , they stayed shut when checking later,10 minutes run time seemed long enough. Roger

hmmmmm,
We tried to "gas" a skunk a few years ago and after 1/2 hour, we had only succeeded in making the animal mad and boy did it make a stinking mess! If I have time, I may try the exaust pipe thing.

Where I live we can"t use the propane system. They have burrowed under buildings, for example, and Momma won"t let me touch off something like that under the bedroom. :)

I"ve found that by hooking a pipe to the exhaust on my (really smoky) 8N and letting that run and puff blue smoke in the holes for an hour, they die off and don"t come back for at least 6 months, sometimes as long as several years. Monoxide kills them and the exhaust stench keeps the replacements from coming back in for a while.

Seems to work for me though I"ve gotta get out there and do it again as I have some coming back in from the neighbors" places.

I only have an acre to deal with here. Also, flood irrigation keeps them out of the yard; they don"t seem to be immune to drowning either. :)

Hope this helps.

It is called a trap. Pull the miserable things out of the ground and feed them to the dogs! That is the only way to make sure they do not dig again. We catch 150 to 200 each year in our alfalfa fields. I am not sure of the brand name of the traps that we use. The mechanism of the trap is mounted on an aluminum plate. There is 2 jaws that extend about 8" down into the hole that you open up when you find the runway. We have tried about 5 different kinds of traps, and these will catch twice the gophers of any other trap. I could find out the brand name of the traps and even get you a few if you need me to. Good luck DK
