On my old case 530/540 the negative side of the coil is connected to the distributor; Is this machine Positive or Negative ground??

From the factory your distributor would have been wired the same way as your battery. If the negative side of the coil goes to ground thru the points (distributor) then the negative side of the battery should go to ground. It will run the other way but the spark potential will not be as great due to the magnetic fields collapsing in the opposite direction. Ultimately in an old automotive type electrical system the only component that is polarity sensitive is the voltage regulator or the cut-out relay. Tractors that use a relay to fire glow plugs may also be polarity sensitive.

To be certain of the proper ground on your 530, you will need to determine where it was built. Case changed the production in 1962 from Rock Island to Racine. All tractors built in Rock Island had positive ground systems and all tractors built in Racine had negative systems. Look at your serial number and if it starts with a 6 it was built in Rock Island with positive and if the number starts with 8 it was built in Racine with negative ground... Gene

I have a couple 300's with negative ground and just had some problems with one I just finished restoring. It would start and run nice sometimes
and then again would start firing irraticaly and
become impossible to start. After checking it out, for longer then I like to admit, I found the coil hooked up with the neg. wire to the distributor, changed it to positive side and now is doing great. Hope this helps. Roger

Thanks for the info so far; It'll be a big help. The next question would be , what cylinder is number one? I cant find the timing marks nor do I know which distributor contact is "1".
The main problem is I cant get spark.

Pull Spark plug on #1 crank the engine while you hold your finger over the hole when you feel compression the rotor should approximately point to the #1 terminal on the distributor... if it is wired correctly. I have DC and VAC and I assume there is a stamp on the flywheel edge on yours also. For correct timing the points should just begin to open when the stamped mark is centered in the inspection port and you felt compression on the #1 cylinder.

Coils will actually function if they are wired up backwards, but the spark plugs don't work as well (but in a low RPM engine, you may not notice it) A better check is to see which terminal of the battery is connected to the chassis. If the battery is missing, the only way to check would be to see which way the starter spins when voltage is applied.

Starters, except for certain MODERN permanent-magnet units, are series-wound DC motors and are NOT polarity-sensitive.

They will rotate the SAME direction, regardless of battery polarity!

(The MODERN PM units WILL reverse, with a change of battery polarity.)

With the COIL connected that way, the COIL is set up for (-) ground.
